Food Insecurity in our communities increases. Learn how you can help in very tangible ways.
At the beginning of every month, the first Monday morning at the food pantry is our busiest day. The first Saturday food distribution sees a longer line of waiting cars. The first Monday in October, the Kirk food pantry served 43 families in three hours.
But the beginning of November will not be a normal month. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced the November benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be paused indefinitely if the federal government shutdown continues.
There are more than 82,000 people in Wake County who may not receive food assistance in November. Approximately 33,000 of them are children.
At the Kirk, we remain committed to the Church’s mission: responding to Jesus’s call to “feed my sheep” (John 21:17). We stand ready to continue our food ministry in the midst of our community’s uncertainty, fear, and hunger. Here are three ways you can help:
Collecting Food
Already, your support of the Kirk’s food pantry has made our work possible. It is needed now more than ever. We will keep an updated list of high-demand non-perishable items to donate here. There will be collection carts in the narthex before worship on Sunday.
Financial Donations
If you would like to support the food ministry in other ways, financial donations are also needed. We expect our community partner, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, to face considerable demand. Donating to the Kirk food ministry will help our shoppers supplement what we receive from the Food Bank. Your gifts will also support their critical mission. Donating money to food banks helps those agencies buy fresh food at lower, wholesale prices. Give to Kirk Food Pantry here.
Prayer
Finally, you can support this ministry through prayer. We ask that you uplift all those who are hungry today, and all those who are scared for what tomorrow may bring. May we hear and reflect on Christ’s words in Matthew 25, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.”
