Prodigal Son

January 7-February 4

The Prodigal Son is just one of the many parables that Jesus used in his teaching. A parable is a story that Jesus told to teach people something about God or about how God wants us to live. This parable may also be called the “Parable of the Loving Father”.

A man had two sons. The younger son wanted his share of the family property so he could go his own way in the world. He packed up everything he owned and left his brother and father. But he wasted his money on wild living and soon was so poor he had nothing to eat. So he decided to go back to his father, asking forgiveness and seeking a job as servant for his father. When he was still a long way off, his father recognized him and ran to meet him, forgiving him and crying out in celebration. The older son, who had stayed faithful to his father all along was upset. The father reassured his older son of his constant love but also reaffirmed his love for the younger son who had been lost, but now was found.

Our key memory verse is from I John 4:11

"Dear friends, since God loved us this much, we must love each other"

What we will learn:

God loves us even when we do wrong things.

When we are truly sorry God forgives us.

Making bad choices can hurt yourself and others.

God doesn’t want us to be jealous even when things don’t seem fair.

God wants us to be thankful for what we have.

Family Time and Prayer

Read: Luke 15:11-32 or read your favorite Bible story book

Reflection: The younger son thought he didn’t need his father and went his own way. Do we ever act that way toward God? What are some things we do when we wander away from God.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for loving us so much that you forgive us even when we do things that are wrong. Help us to do the right thing. Amen

Offering: Your offering will go to Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network. We will be helping homeless families in Wake county. Please bring your offering to the jar in the Great Hall.
