Jesus encounter with Martha and Mary, as recorded in these verses, is part of a larger series of reflections on how to be a good disciple. In these verses in Luke, Mary is the one who models hospitality for her honored guest.
Jesus and his disciples were traveling. When they got to a village, Martha welcomed them into her home. Marthas sister, Mary, immediately went to sit at the feet of Jesus so she could hear his every word. Martha was busy and worried because she still had much to do. She complained to Jesus about Mary, asking him to tell her to help! But Jesus told Martha that she worried about too many things. Mary had chosen best.
