But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” — Psalm 86:15 (NSRV)

Jonah did not want to help the people of Nineveh. When God decided not to destroy the city, Jonah was so mad he wanted to die! Like Jonah, sometimes we have trouble accepting God’s love and mercy for our enemies.

Imagine that Jonah is a third-grader. There’s a mean boy named Adolph in Jonah’s class. Yesterday, Adolph shot spitballs at the other kids. Today, Adolph tells the teacher: “I’m really sorry about the spitballs. I promise I won’t do it again, and to make up for it, I’ll stay after school and wash all the desk tops.” The teacher smiles and says, “I accept your apology, Adolph.”
