Dear Family and Friends of the Kirk,
The Stewardship Committee has been asking us a question
this season: Got Commitment? You may recognize
this take-off on the milk advertisements: Got Milk?
The dairy producers wanted to make milk more attractive. They
were trying to lead me away from my soda to a healthy glass
of milk. The idea of commitment may have the same feel as
drinking a glass of milk for some people. It does not sound
as attractive as following your passion or fulfilling your
life. Commitment may sound like sacrifice and that can be
a hard sell in a self-indulgent age. But Jesus said something
about sacrifice. He told those who wanted to follow him to
count the cost before following him. It would cost them something
to follow him. He said to those who would seek to save their
life would lose it and those who would lose their lives for
his sake and the sake of the gospel would save it. (Mark 8:35)
Think about that. Jesus was asking for commitment. It was
the commitment that he needed from his followers to further
the work he came to do in the world. It was also commitment
that brought life and peace to those who followed him and
later went out in his name. They would say that in committing
their lives their time, their love, their energy, their
minds and yes, their money to the cause of Christ they
discovered the fullness of life that eludes so many people.
Thanks to their commitment they became a blessing to the world.
As you share your pledges in worship on October 21st I hope
you will hear the question Got Commitment? as
meaning more than giving your money. I hope your financial
gift will be an expression of your discipleship and your desire
to love and serve the gospel of Jesus Christ. I hope it will
express your desire that the Kirk be a healthy and vital congregation
of disciples desiring to minister to the world. Your gifts
will help us grow in the work and ministry we feel Christ
has called us to share with the world.
With gratitude for you and your commitment,
Jody
