Jody's Journal

Dear Friends,

This Sunday is Pentecost—when the church remembers it was created by the intention of God through the gift of the Holy Spirit. This Sunday we will remember the way God worked in the life of the Kirk. We are also asking you to wear RED because red is the color that symbolizes the gift of the Spirit. We have special liturgy planned for the celebration. I hope to see you on Sunday.

Our Summer Intern, Susan Sexton will begin her work on Tuesday, May 29. The Library will serve as her office. Please come by to greet her. She will be assisting in worship on June 3.

At the Session Meeting last Sunday night we were reminded of the importance of theological education as we heard a request for support for Union-PSCE. Presbyterians are proud of our tradition of having educated clergy in leadership. We believe that the mind is a gift of God that is to be nurtured and developed and used for the work of faith. (You've probably heard, A mind is a terrible thing to waste.) Presbyterians might say it is sinful to waste such a gift. We remembered that one of our own, Lindsey Wells Peery, graduated from Union-PSCE this year and another member, Catherine Devins, is currently attending. Katelyn Gordon is at Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Throughout the years the Kirk has become a place where people have felt called to seminary as they sense God’s call to serve the church.

At the Session Meeting we also approved a three-year partnership with brothers and sisters in Guatemala. You will hear much more about this in the coming weeks as we develop relationships of mutual care and support with Christian brothers and sisters in Pala.

In June I’ll be joining the youth on their ASP Mission trip to Man, WV. (If you look it up on google maps, you see it is very isolated!) I look forward to sharing in this experience with our youth and to be of service in mission. One of my goals is to participate over time in events, trips and retreats that connect me more closely with members of the Kirk. I have found this to be the best way to build relationships with fellow church members. I recommend it to all.

Long Range Planning continues its work of reviewing and revising goals. See the webpage link. They encourage your response, reflections and prayers. They are promising and exciting goals. In September, we will begin to make critical decisions about directions for the Kirk. Please hold the committee, the goals and the process in prayer.

With gratitude for you,

Jody
