Nancy's Notes

We are quickly approaching Thanksgiving and with that I want to offer my appreciation for the many, many adults who make youth ministry at the Kirk possible. I realize that when listing names, it is easy to leave someone out. If I do so, please let me know, but more importantly know that your work is appreciated and known to God and to the youth, even if not listed here!

Adult elders for youth are Dewey Cassell and Lynn Godwin. Dewey completes his term on Session at the end of December and I am grateful for his three years of dedicated service and faithful leadership. Lynn will serve another year and we will welcome a new adult elder in January.

Middle school youth group advisors are: Barry Harmon, Joan Humphreys, Jane McNeill, Vince Rash, Kate Wells, Dona Woodard, and Rich Woynicz. High school advisors are: Ann Branch, Doug and Judi Nagy, Jack and Robin Shannon, Allison Stafford, and Harlan Stafford. The youth group planning team is: Stephanie Bynum, Jo Nygard, Lauren Porter, Allison Stafford, and Amy Woynicz. Youth meal coordinators are Sandra Clark and Mary Hall. Many parents of youth serve on meal teams to prepare and serve Sunday night meals. All these folks make Sunday night youth group possible.

Joel Huenemann has served as high school Sunday school teacher for many years and his faith inspires many youth. I am grateful for his continuing service. The Faith Challenge staff includes: Howard Brown, Kathy Carmer, Dewey Cassell, Lisa Clark, Allison Connors, Terri Fleming, Kay Guyton, Barry Harmon, Joan Humphreys, John Leonard, Gino and Ruth Menechella, Vince Rash, Phil Saunders, David Snow, Karen Stancil, Melinda Thompson, Carol Wells, Mai Wickelgren, Dona Woodard, and Amy Woynicz.

Confirmation is headed by Associate Pastor Stephanie Arnold and Edla Prevette. Each confirmand is mentored by an adult in the congregation and these are: Nathan Bigger, Doug and Hope Brown, Sue Bunning, Linda Bruggers, Doug Burton, Stephanie Bynum, Mary Droessler, Mary Helen Earle, Dave Earley, Pete Gaucher, Lynn Godwin, Barry Harmon, Annette Homiller, Jennifer Leonard, Judi Nagy, Melanie Rankin, Phil Saunders, David Snow, Karen Stancil, Pattie Stephenson, Bill Stokes, and Kate Wells.

As you can see, it takes many hands and hearts to help our youth grow in faith. I am so appreciative of all that these adults share of themselves and of their love of God. Thank you!

Nancy

Presbyterian Women's Spring Retreat March 7-9, 2008
Christian Family Living Retreat Center, North Topsail Beach, NC

Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

This year's Presbyterian Women's retreat will explore the practice of simplicity as both an inward and an outward discipline. Some of the topics and questions we will explore include: What are the Biblical roots of simplicity? What are some of the disciplines and practices that help cultivate simplicity of heart and mind? What does simplicity look like when given outward expression? What is the relationship between simplicity and freedom in Christ.

Make your reservations now! Kirk women and friends are welcome to attend the retreat. The cost will be $145 for Friday 5pm - Sunday noon, and will include three meals on Saturday and Sunday brunch.

Reservations and $75 deposit (or $145 full cost) can be given to Elaine Loyack, Jill Kaufman, or Sharon Welker, your 2008 retreat coordinators, or to Circle or PW treasurers. Deposits are due by the PW Christmas Brunch on December 8. A decision will be made at the brunch as to whether we have enough registrations to keep the reservation (we need 35 minumum, and the dining hall hosts 60 maximum). If we cancel by December 8, we can get our money back, and so will you. After that date, deposits will be non-refundable. Please plan to pay the remaining cost of the retreat, $70, by February 8.

Stewardship Pledge Update
Thank you to those who have already made their pledges. As of last Monday, 47% of the members have pledged a total of $685,000. Of the pledges received, the trend is encouraging in terms of increased commitments. The average increase in the pledge is 8.5%. We are still waiting to hear from the rest of the congregation. We hope to hear from every member of the church, even if some find that they cannot make a pledge this year. Our goal is for 100% response that will enable us to grow in mission and ministry. Please remember you can make a pledge online at www.kirkofkildaire.org or by submitting a pledge card.

Holiday Help For Our Community
Christian Community in Action (CCA) is gearing up for an exciting NEW way to help families at Christmas! In addition to furnishing holiday meals from the CCA
pantry, they will be partnering with The Christmas Store which is hosted by New Horizons Fellowship Church in Apex. This will be an enlarged community-wide project, run by neighbors who want to help neighbors in the true Christmas spirit. Communications among the various helping agencies will make sure that referrals are going to the most needy with this streamlined method of providing help by church and community groups or individuals.

Here is the way it works: Parents in financial crisis may apply at CCA's Crisis Ministry or Western Wake Crisis Center in Apex for one referral that allows them to actually go and "SHOP" for their children's gifts. While they are choosing three items per child from donated toys, games, clothing, etc. their young children will be entertained by Santa's "helpers" in a separate space. For further information and how you or your group can make a direct donation for Santa's gifts or money go to the webpage at www.NHF.cc/ChristmasStore.

Crisis ministry pantry needs continue to be canned vegetables, fruits, meats, and soups.

My Vision of the Fazioli

The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.

Johann Sebastian Bach

How many of you remember Music Dedication Sunday? We began with fifteen minutes of piano music, and by the time the chimes rang, our hearts and minds were prepared for the worship of God. We ended with piano and organ and congregation united in song, dedicated for another week of service. Such is the power of music and the instruments that make it.

The Fazioli is a piano handcrafted of the finest materials, made in Italy. It has such a reputation, we have had professional musicians volunteer to give benefit performances. It has such a reputation, some people drove from Chapel Hill to attend services. Frank Pittman, our organist, teaches at Meredith College. He had random people talk to him about the Kirk and the Fazioli. What an opportunity for outreach, fellowship, and worship.

This excellence comes at a cost. I did not even know that such an expensive piano existed, until I served on this committee. It is about the same as a high-end Lexus, $85,000, (and that is a great price). This piano is two years old. A new one is almost twice that much. We can be kind and say that a Lexus would be a good car for twenty years. The Fazioli will last for generations.

I am reminded of a devotional by Max Lucado:

Play Sublimely

"Antonio Stradivari was a seventeenth-century violin maker whose name in its Latin form, Stradivarius, has become synonymous with excellence. He once said that to make a violin less than his best would be to rob God, who could not make Antonio Stradivari's violins without Antonio. He was right. God could not make Stradivarius violins without Antonio Stradivari. Certain gifts were given to that craftsman that no other violin maker possessed. In the same vein, there are certain things you can do that no one else can. In the great orchestra we call life, you have an instrument and a song, and you owe it to God to play them both sublimely."

I think that the world would be a poorer place with no cathedrals, or Sistine Chapel, or Stradivarious violins, or Fazioli pianos. They lift us up. Let us play sublimely. Join me in supporting the piano fund.
