Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends at the Kirk,

This Sunday is a special one at the Kirk as we welcome David and Jeannene Wiseman to the church. They are missionaries in Guatemala and have played a key role in helping us develop our relationship with our friends in Pala'. David and Jeannene will lead a special Sunday School class in the Fellowship Hall. David will preach. We’ll have a special potluck brunch following the 11:00 a.m. service. It will be a Sunday to celebrate our new partnership with the Peace of God church in Pala’. I hope you’ll be here.

We received our first Stewardship update this week. 44% of the congregation has submitted pledges so far. I would love to see us reach as close to 100% participation as possible. It would be a very tangible sign that church members support the congregation we call home. The pledges we’ve received so far represent a 5.89% increase over the previous year. Thank you to those who have already made their pledges. We hope to receive the remaining pledges in the next couple of weeks. The committees are beginning to work on their budgets and the pledge information is helpful in formulating our ministry goals and dreams for the coming year.

This week I experienced one of the privileges of being a pastor at the Kirk. I was part of the service for Lois Golightly, mother of Wendy Little. Lois loved her family and was well loved by her family. We celebrated God’s gift of her life and her resurrection as family and friends gathered for worship. Caregivers organized a meal with food brought from members of the congregation. Each salad and casserole was a symbol of our love and support. Thank you for your care for one another. This week Cathy Church Norman’s grandmother, Mary Turner, died. Along with Cathy, her mother and her sister (both members of the Kirk) were remembered in prayer. Warren Bock led the service for Mary Turner. I am grateful to be a part of a congregation that knows how to love one another, especially in times of need.

I continue to be grateful for you. I look forward to seeing you in church on Sunday.

Grace and Peace,

Jody

Presbyterian Womens Spring Retreat March 7-9, 2008
Christian Family Living Retreat Center, North Topsail Beach, NC

Ladies, it is an exciting time of year - time to be thankful for the outreach work and support that we find through Circles and PW. It is time to be thankful for the beauty of our earth. And it is time to make plans to enjoy the beauty of the beach with other Christian women.

Even if you are not active in a Circle, all Kirk women and friends are welcome to attend the retreat. The cost will be $145 for Friday 5:00 p.m. - Sunday noon, and will include three meals on Saturday and Sunday brunch. We are excited to announce that Susan Mazzara will lead the retreat, focusing on the theme of simplicity inner and outer.

Reservations and $75 deposit (or $145 full cost) can be given to Elaine Loyack, Jill Kaufman, or Sharon Welker, your 2008 retreat coordinators, or to Circle or PW treasurers. Deposits are due by the PW Christmas Brunch on December 8. A decision will be made at the brunch as to whether we have enough registrations to keep the reservation (we need 35 minumum, and the dining hall hosts 60 maximum). If we cancel by December 8, we can get our money back, and so will you. After that date, deposits will be non-refundable. Please plan to pay the remaining cost of the retreat, $70, by February 8.

Needs & Wants

We're Looking For Kirk Database Help
The Kirk has been blessed to have member Roy Dixon build and oversee its member database for many years. Roy would now like to have help in managing it. The Personnel and Office Committee is looking for someone knowledgable in the use of "Microsoft Access" to assist Roy. If you have such knowledge and would be willing to volunteer, or have questions, please contact Roy Dixon or the church office 467-4944.

Do You Use Your Envelope Number?
If you go to a bank to conduct a transaction, the first thing the teller is going to ask you is "What is your account number?" The teller asks this for two reasons:

The first is to verify your identity, and
The second is to quickly find your account on their computer.

Remember that there may be another person in the bank records with the same name as yours and you may have more than one account at the bank. The same is true at the Kirk.

Your envelope number acts as your Kirk account number. We ask for it on all contributions, the e-pledge form, and the hand-written pledge form for the same reasons as the teller at the bank. It identifies the exact account and it allows processing a contribution or pledge in about one-third the time (especially if the hand writing on a pew envelope or pledge card has to be deciphered). So please be sure to always include your envelope number on pledges and contributions.

Hospital Supplies For Guatemala
Kirk members traveling to Guatemala in January 2008 plan to visit Hospitalito Atitlán in Santiago Atitlán, Sololá Guatemala to learn more about the hospital’s needs and to bring supplies the hospital requests in its wish list. The Kirk’s Handwork Circle is sponsoring a drive to collect these items. We invite Kirk members to participate in this drive in any of the following ways:

• Drop off wish list items in the collection box in the alcove next to the narthex.

• Knit or crochet red caps in cotton yarn. Among the items on the wish list are red caps for newborns. Handwork Circle is making a special effort to make and collect newborn hats. Patterns are available in the alcove beside the elevator.

• Provide red cotton yarn for knitters and crocheters to use. The patterns we are following use Lily Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn in red (available at AC Moore and Michael’s), but we will be happy to improvise with any red cotton yarn you have on hand. We request 100% cotton only please.

• Come knit with us at Wednesday Night Live beginning November 14.

You can find the wish list, patterns, and more information about the drive on the Kirk’s web site at http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/GuatemalaMedSupplies/Supplies.html. Questions? Call Susan Mazzara.

To learn more about Hospitalito Atitlán, visit their web site at http://www.puebloapueblo.org/ha.html.

Stephen Ministry News

"A Taste of Stephen Ministry"
Please remember "A Taste of Stephen Ministry" will be Sunday, November 11. We hope you will come and get a "taste" of what Stephen Ministry is all about, and share a taste of something good to eat at the same time. The information session will be held after both services. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall after the 8:45 service, or join us in the Session Room after the 11:00 service. We look forward to seeing you there.

Stephen Ministry:
Christ Caring for People Through People
The Stephen Leader Team expresses thanks to those in the congregation who completed our Kirk survey. Many of you were willing to take a few minutes from Wednesday Night Live!, Sunday School class, or Circles and other groups to complete the forms. We also had a great response to the online survey: 60 took the time to go to the site and share your thoughts. With congregation, staff, and current Stephen Ministers responding, it is very affirming to know that people strongly believe in the importance of this outreach, are comfortable with knowing how to request or become a Stephen Minister, and find our pastoral staff supportive. The Leader Team will continue to look at the responses, and use the data to guide decisions related to helping all in the congregation and our visitors know more about Stephen Ministry.

New Paint in the Fellowship Hall
Take a look at our lovely "new" Fellowship Hall! A big thanks to the Projects Task Force members who painted it: John and Joyce Billotte, Dave Buning, Amy and Joel Huenemann, Joe Keller and Jack Shannon (Barb's husband). Another big thanks to the Fellowship Hall
Task Force who selected the new colors: Joyce Billotte, Noel Howard, Jenn Nicosia and Carole Rhodes.

Let's all make an effort to keep the Fellowship Hall walls looking "new" by:

• using only blue painter's tape to attach signs to the walls. Never push pins or staples.
• placing tables, chairs & trash cans at least four inches away from the walls and columns.
• cleaning up spills right away.
• moving the carts of tables & chairs & room dividers carefully.

Thanks, Joyce Billotte

Guatemala Update

Fifteen travelers will represent the Kirk on our 3rd trip to Guatemala January 5th -12th, 2008. They are:

Stephanie Arnold
Susan Mazzara
Kathy Wells
Kate Wells
Sylvia Nygard
Taylor Jordan
Patty Snow
Carol Hamilton
Jill Kaufman
Brian Kaufman
Virginia Anthony
Barney Hale
Annette Homiller
Hal Jordan
Ashleigh Hardes (Mary Kay's daughter)

The trip will consist of four days in Pala', interviewing the scholarship recipients, reviewing the progress of the economic development initiative, getting lessons in Quiché and native crafts and worshipping with the people there. Then we will travel to Santiago Atilan to visit the temporary hospital there, learning of their program and taking supplies for the hospital.

The Kirk has forwarded $6,500 to CESSMAQ, the service arm of the Maya Quiché Presbytery, for the vocational training, health seminars and the mini-loan program, all of which are underway thanks to your generosity. We recently received a letter from Francisco Mas, an elder in the Peace of God Church in Pala, stating that 24 farmers had been able to buy additional coffee plants and that 28 women had received loans for buying pigs and other items.

The Kirk has agreed to fund 28 scholarships for students from Pala for 2008. Half of those funds have been transferred to CESSMAQ. We have taken on more scholarships than originally planned and will need additional funds in excess of those already raised to fulfill our 3-year commitment. The good news is that we are getting a volume discount so that the scholarships are costing a little less than $300 per year.

The Guatemala Mission Committee will hold an auction to benefit the programs in Guatemala (similar to the fund raiser for the handicapped ramp) on February 8, 2008 at MacGregor Downs County Club. Please look for upcoming announcements regarding
that event.

David Wiseman, Presgov Mission Co-worker in Guatemala and former pastor at Cary Presbyterian Church, will give a program concerning his work in Guatemala during the Sunday school hour on November 4. All are welcome.

State Fair Parking Lot
Thanks to everyone for another successful state fair parking lot fundraiser! Although this was not a record-setting year, we still raised much-needed funds that will support youth programs, retreats, and Kirk Kredits. Nearly half of the youth budget each year is raised at this fundraiser. An e-mail will be sent to all youth and parents this week with a list of everyone who worked at the parking lot. Please notify Nancy Stokes of any corrections because this is the list that will be used to allot Kirk Kredits.

A special thanks again goes to Harlan Stafford who is the parking lot organizer. Harlan was present every day of the fair to set up and take down the signs, provide supplies, manage the volunteers, collect and deposit money and many other tasks. This project would not be possible without Harlan's hard work. Thank you!
