Dear Family and Friends of the Kirk,

The next few Sundays will be special at the Kirk for very different reasons.

This coming Sunday you will have an opportunity to dedicate your financial pledges before God. It is a moving thing to see people come forward to dedicate their pledges to God as an act of discipleship. The theme, “Got Commitment?” also “got” me thinking about a broader understanding of commitment. When you joined the church you did so by a profession of faith which included your desire to follow and serve Jesus Christ. So in the service we are including an opportunity to recommit and reaffirm your membership vows. I hope you will see this as an opportunity to reflect upon the vows you made when you professed your faith and became a member of the church. Sometimes couples renew their marriage vows as a way to affirm the relationship that brings meaning and life to them. I hope this will be a chance to affirm your relationship with God and express your desire to be a part of the work of Jesus Christ.

On October 28 we will celebrate Reformation Sunday and All Saints Sunday. The service includes liturgy from the period of the Reformation as a way to give you a sense of worship from those times. I will preach on the understanding of Scripture from the Protestant perspective. We will also take time to remember those at the Kirk who died in the past year and to give thanks for their lives. If there is someone you would like to remember (whether members or friends of the Kirk) on October 28th, please let the Church Office know.

On November 4th we will welcome David and Jeannene Wisemen who are our mission co-workers in Guatemala. David and Jeannene have been our key contacts, leaders and friends as we develop our partnership with brothers and sisters in Pala’. David will help lead worship and share in preaching. We plan to have a special Sunday School forum led by them and enjoy good fellowship with them following the 11am worship as we share a pot luck lunch. I hope you will be here to meet them and to say thank you for all they have done for us at the Kirk.

So there you have it- three Sundays. One, where we ask you to dedicate your finanicial giving to support the work of the church. The second Sunday to remember our Reformed roots as the source from which we still learn much about faith and life. The third to celebrate the growing mission of the Kirk.

I’ll be away Monday - Thursday next week with my sermon study group to study the texts that lead to preaching. I will join my good friends in the study of scriptures and in a time where we support and learn from one another. I hope you are finding such a group of support in your life.

November "Windows" Issue Deadline
The deadline for articles for the November issue of "Windows" is Monday, October 22, at 9:30 a.m. There will be no emailed Krier next week due to this issue.

What is Eat with Eight?
Check out this program if you are interested in having dinner together with a few other Kirk members at least once per month (November, 2007–March, 2008 or beyond if you wish). The Eat with Eight program sets up groups of 7-9 adults. Each group determines their own menu, meeting times and places. Ideas include having a potluck meal, eating out, or sharing a meal in some other way each month. The groups can meet as often as they choose. The Small Groups Committee simply organizes the groups from the respondents on the survey. Sign up for Eat with Eight on the portico October 14 - 28. 50+ Group
The 50+ Group will meet this evening, October 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall to enjoy a potluck supper. All are welcome to come and hear our own Tom Droessler talk on "Was George Washington Really Our First President?" If you have questions, please call Marcia and Boyd Schroeder.

Book Discussion Group

The Book Discussion Group will meet Friday, October 19, 7:30 p.m. at the home of Dan and Annette Homiller. The book for discussion is "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides. All are welcome to attend, even if you have not read the book.

Trunk-or-Treat The Wake County Autism Society Trunk-or-Treat festival will be at the Kirk on Saturday, October 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Trunk-or-Treat is an event to bring the fun of Halloween to special-needs children. The festival features inflatables, carnival games, craft stations, face-painting, and plenty of food and drink. The night ends with children 'trunk-or-treating' through the parking lot to fill their bags with treats. Please see the table in the office hallway for further information or to donate craft supplies. Thanks You!

Free to Breathe Run/Walk Rally
On Saturday November 3, come join many other Kirk members and participate in the Free to Breathe 5K and l Mile Run/Walk & Rally at Ravenscroft School 9:00 a.m. We are walking in memory of Sara Saunders and others who have died from lung cancer. You can sign up online at FreetoBreathe.Org and sign up under Sara's Team. Cost to partcipate is $20 if you sign up in advance. If you cannot walk sign up online to make a donation to Sara's Team to support the cause. 100% of the money raised goes to research to prevent lung cancer.

Youth and their families are also encouraged to walk or donate as a way to support Kenneth and Hayden Saunders.

Cross-Stitchers Needed Presbyterian Women presents a cross-stitched plaque to the family of each baby baptized at the Kirk. Our supply is running low and we need more! Mission Matters

October Food Drive for Seniors The Kirk is collecting food for the elderly in our community. Many seniors have dietary restrictions that are not met with items collected by most food drives. Products sought include nutritional drinks (e.g., Ensure, Boost), and low-sodium, low-sugar fruits, meats, soups, and vegetables. No glass, please. The posters around the church mention a collection barrel outside the office, but you will notice that it looks remarkably like a cardboard box. The proceeds will be taken to the Food Pantry, run by Urban Ministries of Wake County. Thank you for the gift of food.

CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN ACTION

Bibles - A Special Request! The Dorcas Thrift Shop often receives donations of "almost new" Bibles, which go straight to a supply kept in the Crisis Ministry client waiting room. Anyone applying for help through CCA is welcome to take one of these home FREE, whether or not they are eligible for our monetary help. Also, any shop customers are welcome to these since we do not SELL Bibles. This supply needs replenishing - can YOU help spread the Word? Bring any kind or translation in good condition to the Dorcas Shop receiving door/window (along with all other donations).

Current Food Pantry Needs
Canned fruits, vegetables, soup, and meat products (tuna and other fish, stew, ravioli, etc.) cereal, rice, and 2 lb. bags of flour and sugar.

Million Meal Event At Cary Mall This Saturday
The Cary Rotary Club needs volunteers of all ages (6 years and older) this Saturday to help assemble meal packages for alleviation of world hunger. Shifts are 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Many of you did this last year and had a blast. The assembly lines will be operating outside Sears. No need to call or email about participating, but bring a cap or hair net if you come. Hopefully many of you can spare a couple of hours for this very worthy cause.

Celebrate Our Partnership with Pala

Join Kirk members and friends following 11:00 worship on November 4 for brunch in the Fellowship Hall. David and Jeannene Wiseman, formerly of Cary Presbyterian Church and now missionaries to Guatemala, will be there, too. Bring your favorite dish to share. Please bring enough to feed 10 - 12 persons using the following schedule:

A - L Main dish

M - S Side dish

T - Z Dessert

The Fellowship and Mission Committees will be on hand in the Fellowship Hall kitchen before worship if you would like to drop off your dish to keep it warmed or chilled.

There will be a table set up during the potluck to sign up for donations of items or services for the Guatemala fund raising auction in February. Please think about items you or someone you know could donate to auction and sign them up at the potluck.

Mark your calendars to come to the Kirk on Thursday, November 1, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for dinner. Carrabba's Italian Grill will provide a great meal of chicken marsala. We will be entertained at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary by Mark Wells, Chapel Hill jazz pianist and our own Frank Pittman playing classics for your enjoyment. It will be a wonderful evening of "Dinner and a Grand!" All proceeds will support the piano fund. You may order carry out only for $10, dine in and music for $20, or attend only the concert for $15. Reservations are required for dinner and may be made in the church office (467-4944). Payment and reservations deadline is October 22. Childcare provided.

Youth Group-Oct 21

Death and life after death will be the topic for youth group this Sunday, October 21. Youth will divide in age groups and rotate to three different areas. Stephanie Arnold will talk about what the Bible says about resurrection and life after death. A grief counselor will discuss death and grief. Youth will also do a guided meditation and then draw or use clay to respond to the meditation. A Kirk Stephen Minister will be available to meet one-on-one if requested.

We recognize this important topic may not be suitable for every youth. We ask parents to make the decision with their youth on attendance or not. If you would like more information or wish to discuss a particular situation, please contact Nancy Stokes.

Montreat Youth Conference Registration information and forms are now available in the youth kiosk in the narthex. A deposit of $100 and the

registration form are due November 18. We are requesting July 13-19 as our first choice and July 6-12 as our second choice. We will not know until mid-January which week we will actually attend.

Guatemala Night-Oct 28

Youth group on Oct 28 will focus on the Kirk's partnership with the church in Pala, Guatemala. HS and MS will be together for part of the evening and later HS youth will also pack goodie boxes for last year's graduates. If you did not already bring something for the boxes, please do so on Sunday night. Thanks!
