Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends of the Kirk,

The Stewardship Committee has been asking us a question this season: “Got Commitment?” You may recognize this take-off on the milk advertisements: “Got Milk?” The dairy producers wanted to make milk more attractive. They were trying to lead me away from my soda to a healthy glass of milk. The idea of commitment may have the same feel as drinking a glass of milk for some people. It does not sound as attractive as following your passion or fulfilling your life. Commitment may sound like sacrifice and that can be a hard sell in a self-indulgent age. But Jesus said something about sacrifice. He told those who wanted to follow him to count the cost before following him. It would cost them something to follow him. He said to those who would seek to save their life would lose it and those who would lose their lives for his sake and the sake of the gospel would save it. (Mark 8:35) Think about that. Jesus was asking for commitment. It was the commitment that he needed from his followers to further the work he came to do in the world. It was also commitment that brought life and peace to those who followed him and later went out in his name. They would say that in committing their lives – their time, their love, their energy, their minds and yes, their money— to the cause of Christ they discovered the fullness of life that eludes so many people. Thanks to their commitment they became a blessing to the world.

As you share your pledges in worship on October 21st I hope you will hear the question “Got Commitment?” as meaning more than giving your money. I hope your financial gift will be an expression of your discipleship and your desire to love and serve the gospel of Jesus Christ. I hope it will express your desire that the Kirk be a healthy and vital congregation of disciples desiring to minister to the world. Your gifts will help us grow in the work and ministry we feel Christ has called us to share with the world.

With gratitude for you and your commitment,

Jody

Mary Kay's Cary Days

Dear friends at the Kirk,

This coming Sunday morning will be somewhat of an intergenerational music day in worship with our chancel filled with children, teens and adults! Chancel Choir (11:00) will be singing an arrangement for organ, trumpet and voices of the hymn "How Firm a Foundation." Thanks to Barbara Moore for her joyful trumpet work! The Chancel Ringers (8:45) are offering a selection entitled "Canticle of Faith" which has some interesting bell techniques to hear and to see. The Joyful Ringers (11:00) will open our worship with "The Heavens are Declaring." This is the first appearance this fall for these young ringers.

Two young pianists are offering their gifts in worship this week. Both are Kirk members. Ashley Parks will play pre-service music, and selections in worship at the early service. She is home from Washington, DC for the weekend and is the daughter of Rusty and Carol Parks. Dylan Giles, a high school senior is playing during the 11:00 service. Dylan is the son of Steve and Cindi Giles. They are playing selections by Brahms, Rossini, Alexander and Schumann.

The Piano Task Force (PTF) is busy working on various fundraising efforts. This Sunday, Marietjie Wessels, PTF chairperson, will share an update. Mark your calendars for Dinner and a Grand! on November 1 at the Kirk. See further details later in the Krier.

Making music in His name,

Mary Kay

Mission Matters

October Food Drive for Seniors
The Kirk is collecting food for the elderly in our community. Many seniors have dietary restrictions that are not met with items collected by most food drives. Products sought include nutritional drinks (e.g., Ensure, Boost), and low-sodium, low-sugar fruits, meats, soups, and vegetables. No glass, please. The posters around the church mention a collection barrel outside the office, but you will notice that it looks remarkably like a cardboard box. The proceeds will be taken to the Food Pantry, run by Urban Ministries of Wake County. Thank you for the gift of food.

If you are interested in participating (AND have at least one free afternoon or evening per week!), please come to the organizational meeting on October 14th after worship in the office. You may also let Stephanie Arnold know.

FOR EVERYONE

State Fair Parking Lot
The parking lot starts Friday, October 12. We still have some critical openings on Saturday, October 13. If there is any way you can help, please contact Harlan Stafford.

Remember to leave home early so you can begin your shift on time. Traffic may be a problem! We are counting on each person to be at the parking lot at the date and time they signed up for, but if you run into a last-minute problem, you may contact Harlan.

Thanks to everyone for making this a great youth fundraiser. See you at the fair!

Death and Life After Death-October 21
The youth group program on October 21 will be on death and life after death. Youth will divide in age groups and rotate to three different areas. Associate Pastor Stephanie Arnold will talk about what the Bible says about resurrection and life after death. A grief counselor will discuss death and grief. Youth will also do a guided meditation and then draw or use clay to respond to the meditation. A Kirk Stephen Minister will be available to meet with youth one-on-one as needed.

We recognize this important topic may not be suitable for every youth. We ask parents to make the best decision for their youth on attendance or not. If you would like more information or wish to discuss a particular situation, please contact Nancy Stokes (467-4944).

The next youth council meeting is Sunday, October 14 at noon in the Great Hall. Lunch provided.
