Nancy's Notes

Youth ministry for fall is off to a great start! Attendance on Sunday mornings in Faith Challenge, confirmation, and the high school class has been fantastic. If your youth has not attended yet, I encourage them to do so. The teachers and curriculum are dynamic and engaging with the goal of helping youth mature in faith.

Fifty-six youth and adults visited Camp Chestnut Ridge last weekend for the annual youth fall retreat. The theme was Growing with God and Sunday night youth group will continue this theme throughout the year. I am grateful for the adults that spent their weekend with our youth and for the continued dedication of all youth advisors.

Youth group calendars are available in the youth kiosk in the narthex. Please take one. We always have room for more youth on Sunday nights.

The State Fair parking lot is coming soon- - October 12-21! This great fundraiser organized by the hard work of Harlan Stafford provides about half the overall budget for youth ministry. It requires many hands and feet. Please sign-up in the narthex if you have not done so.

It is already time to plan for next summer's activities! We should know our week for Appalachia Service Project in October and begin taking deposits. Although we will not know our Montreat week until February, we must send in an approximate number attending by December 1. Our first choice for the High School youth conference is July 13-19 and second is July 6-12. Massanatta Springs Middle School Conference is a fabulous event for current 6th, 7th and 8th graders and we plan to attend June 19-22.

And last, but certainly not least, I request your prayers for all the youth and adults in youth ministry. We need God to guide and uphold us, and your prayers certainly help. Thank you.

Nancy

Mary Kay's Cary Days

Dear Kirk friends,

Thanks to so many of you who continue to support our branches of music ministry here at the Kirk! Do you know that old rocker song “Wake Me When September Ends” by Green Day? Well, it has been a busy, but very satisfying month, thanks to you!

Psalm 150, our acoustic ensemble, will offer musical selections at the early service this Sunday. They have written a selection based on the scripture text of the day, which they will sing for the first time this week! The handbell ensembles – Chancel Ringers and Coventry Ringers – will offer special selections at the late service. We have a special acoustic treat for you at the beginning of worship! Amanda Decker will also be singing at the 11:00 service a lovely setting of “On Eagle’s Wings.” We are fortunate to have young singers so willing to share their gifts in worship.

I would like to give you an update on the work of the Piano Task Force. As you know, we prepared a brochure to answer many anticipated questions for this sanctuary piano project, but there are always more. In order to keep the conversations flowing, we will try to briefly address them in the bulletin each Sunday beginning this week.

We appreciate the many monetary gifts already received and ask that you continue to prayerfully consider how you may help us keep this wonderful instrument for the Kirk. The Piano Task Force and friends worked the parking lot at the NC State Football game last Saturday and will do another one in November. We will be happy to have more help!

A fundraiser event will take place on Thursday, November 1. We invite you to a dinner and evening of entertainment here at the church! Mike Reams (Kirk member and proprietor of Carrabas Restaurant in Cary) has graciously offered to provide a great dinner featuring chicken marsala to begin serving at 6:00 p.m. Tony Thompson (Raleigh jazz pianist) and his jazz trio will provide music in the sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. Both gentleman have offered to raise funds for the Fazioli grand piano. Dinner reservations are necessary as Mike’s staff will prepare the food fresh here that evening. There is also take-out available. Cost is $20 for dinner and music, $10 for take-out food and $15 for concert tickets at the door. For more information, check out the Krier and flyers in the church and around town. We hope that you will come out and enjoy an evening of fellowship and great music!

Bless you for whatever gifts you offer to our ministry as every one counts!

Peace,

Mary Kay

NCSU Football Parking - Support Mission and Music
When deciding where to park for NCSU home football games, please support the Kirk's organizations by parking in the West Chase lots on WestChase Blvd. off Blue Ridge Rd. just south of the Wade Ave. overpass bridge. Trunk-or-Treat
Halloween is one of the most highly anticipated holidays for kids of all ages. The date brings ghoulish decorations, festivals, costume parties, and culminates with the neighborhood trick-or-treating. For the parents of children with autism, however, it may be a time of stress and anxiety. Whenever their child faces the possibility of social interaction with other kids, there's always the worry that the outcome will not be worth the effort in trying to help their child "fit in."

The Wake County Autism Society Trunk-or-Treat festival will be at the Kirk on Saturday, October 20, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Trunk-or-Treat is an event to bring the fun of Halloween to special-needs children of the Triangle, and to foster an environment of acceptance and love to their families. The festival features inflatables, carnival games, craft stations, face-painting, and plenty of food and drink. The night ends with children 'trunk-or-treating' through the parking lot in order to fill their bags with candy and treats. In the past, participants have done an amazing job decorating their trunks.

A table has been set up in the office hallway with further information and a basket for craft donations.

Mission Matters

Peacemaking Offering
The Peacemaking Offering will be received on the first Sunday of October. Every year, 75% of this offering is sent to Presbytery to support peacemaking efforts throughout the church, and 25% is sent to a recipient designated by the Kirk's Mission Committee. This year's recipient is Project Restore Ferry Place, an undertaking to build fourteen houses in Ferry Place, a block in the Seventeenth Ward of New Orleans. The work crew traveling to New Orleans for the last week of September will take part in this project. Please remember the Peacekeeping Offering, October 7.

October Food Drive for Seniors
During October the Kirk will collect food for the elderly in our community. Many seniors have dietary restrictions or needs that are not met with items collected by most food drives. Products sought during this drive will include nutritional drinks (e.g., Ensure, Boost), and low-sodium, low-sugar fruits, meats, soups, and vegetables. No glass, please. There will be a collection barrel outside the church office. The proceeds will be taken to the Food Pantry, run by Urban Ministries of Wake County.

Library Lingo

Few, if any, church denominations rival the Presbyterian record of providing for higher education opportunities in our country. The September issue of Presbyterian Today is dedicated to the topic of higher education and gives us interesting statistics.

Did you know that there are 64 colleges with Presbyterian connections? Of these, North Carolina has the largest number (9), followed by Pennsylvania (6) and Tennessee (5). The five historically ethnic colleges are in NC (2), AB, AK and TN. The four women's colleges are in GA, NC, PA and VA. The only men's college is Hampden-Sydney in VA which also happens to be the oldest (1775). Together all these colleges enroll about 143,000 students, with 44,000 at the Inter-American University in Puerto Rico. Eleven are ranked among the top-hundred liberal arts colleges.

The issue also lists the twelve seminaries (out of a total of 253) in the Association of Theological Schools (www.ats.edu) related to PC(USA), and ways to become familiar with their programs. There are helpful articles about higher education options, campus ministries, financial aid and relevant books to help students make decisions.

There is a colorful report on the 2007 Presbyterian Youth Triennium, this summer's gathering of 4000 college-age students on the campus of Purdue University, held every three years.

You are invited to stop by the library to check out this informative issue of Presbyterian Today.
