Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends of the Kirk,

I want to say a word of thanks to the many leaders and members of the Kirk who gathered last Saturday for the goal selection process of Long Range Planning. The commitment and love of people at the Kirk are an inspiration to me. I’m especially grateful for members of the Long Range Planning taskforce for leading us. We are blessed.

Wednesday Night Live is off to a great start. The first night was full of good conversation and great food. There was a good spirit in the Fellowship Hall. I’m looking forward to many more Wednesdays sharing a meal with members of the Kirk. I hope you will make your reservations to come when you are able. Remember, you can come and eat even if you are not staying for a program. The serving line is open from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. At 6:15 p.m., we share a blessing, some joys and concerns, have a prayer and often a game just for the fun of it. We are done by 6:30 p.m.

This Sunday we will have a congregational meeting to elect elders to serve on the Session. Those elected will be leading you for the next three years. Please read the information about them in the Krier before the meeting after the 11:00 a.m. service. Pray for them as they prepare to serve. My sermon this Sunday will address the question, “What makes you qualified?” Think about Paul’s qualifications and you will have a hint where I’m headed in the sermon.

This Sunday we also will dedicate those who lead us through the ministry of music. Thank you to Mary Kay, all the directors/leaders of musical groups and those who participate in them. Imagine worship without music. You can’t! We owe deep gratitude for the commitment of time, energy and love to this ministry that helps us worship our Lord.

These are exciting days at the Kirk. Let us give thanks to God for calling us together here.

Grace and Peace,

Jody

Mary Kays Cary Days

Dear members and friends,

Wow, have we been busy! It has been a great start-up of all the Kirk music ensembles this past two weeks. New and returning participants are excitedly, and with great commitment, preparing to offer their personal best in worship. We have new members in Chancel Choir, Genesis Ringers, Coventry Ringers and the children’s choirs. This truly is one of my favorite times of year.

Thanks to Amanda Decker for her expressive solo “On Eagle’s Wings” at the early service this past Sunday. If you missed it, you will have the opportunity to hear her sing again on September 30 at 11:00 a.m. worship. I encourage any interested soloists to contact me, as I am always looking for more singers and instrumentalists.

The sanctuary piano has been safely delivered and was used for the first time in rehearsal last night. I hope you all will come to the pre-service music beginning 20 minutes prior to each service this Sunday. We are grateful to Doug Nagy, Maritjie Wessels, Sue Buning, Flo Westin and Dewey Cassell for the hard work and time-consuming research on the piano project.

On Sunday morning you will find the new supplemental hymnals in the pews! These song books were purchased by designated gifts from many Kirk individuals, families and friends. We have already been singing some songs from this book and we hope that you all will enjoy the variety it offers in our worship. A special thanks to Doug Nagy for designing and attaching the name plates inside each cover and to the Worship Committee for placing them in the sanctuary pew racks.

And lastly, at both services this Sunday, we will be giving special recognition to our many music participants as they begin their year of work for the church. Amy Athavale will sing “The Lord’s Prayer” and there will be special anthems, too.

We are surrounded by so many wonderful people here. You do truly “walk the talk” of Christ’s church!

Peace and Grace,

Mary Kay

Trunk-or-Treat
Halloween is one of the most highly anticipated holidays for kids of all ages. The date brings ghoulish decorations, festivals, costume parties, and culminates with the neighborhood trick-or-treating. For the parents of children with autism, however, it may be a time of stress and anxiety. Whenever their child faces the possibility of social interaction with other kids, there's always the worry that the outcome will not be worth the effort in trying to help their child "fit in."

The Wake County Autism Society Trunk-or-Treat festival will be at the Kirk on Saturday, October 20, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Trunk-or-Treat is an event to bring the fun of Halloween to special-needs children of the Triangle, and to foster an environment of acceptance and love to their families. The festival features inflatables, carnival games, craft stations, face-painting, and plenty of food and drink. The night ends with children 'trunk-or-treating' through the parking lot in order to fill their bags with candy and treats. In the past, participants have done an amazing job decorating their trunks.

We will be setting up a basket for craft donations and a table with further information soon.

Sunday School

Seekers Adult Sunday School Class
Last Sunday we began a new study entitled, "When Jesus Came to Harvard: Making Moral Choices Today" by Harvey Cox, a theology professor at Harvard Divinity School. For twenty years he taught a class called "Jesus and the Moral Life," and this book is his reflections on the content and experiences of that class. It covers a vast array of subjects such as the nature and authority of stories, how understanding Jesus as a rabbi affects how we read his stories, what to make of the present popularity of end-times theology like that of the "Left Behind" books, torture, resurrection, the rise and demise of "The Jesus Seminar," and religious pluralism. If you have an interest in these topics and might enjoy lively discussion, please join us.

This year's recipient is Project Restore Ferry Place, an undertaking to build fourteen houses in Ferry Place, a block in the Seventeenth Ward of New Orleans. Long Range Planning - Are we done yet? How do I get involved?

As announced last Sunday, the goal options have been selected. Does this mean the Task Force is finished? No, but before we talk abut getting involved, listed below are the goals that were selected.

1. Within two-three years, create/establish a worship system that involves most individuals in an active part in the service, to include but not be limited to:

a) incorporating emergent worship elements into the worship experience
b) expanding music offerings during worship, e.g., choirs at all services, increased choir size, youth band/choir
c) incorporating mission aspects of the church's programming at least quarterly

2. Within 18 months, develop spirituality as a major emphasis for the church that provides a suite of spiritual development programs to include daily devotional exercises and meets people where they are and to move them forward in their faith journey.

3. Develop a system of involvement with the goal that every member will be involved in ministry (e.g. interview teams, time and talent, shepherds, sponsors, mission, education, special attention to new members, etc.) that:

• enables all members to recognize and identify their spiritual gifts
• provides a means to understand all opportunities to serve at the Kirk
• intentionally helps all find a place to serve
• develops a system of checks and balances that ensures members are involved (this would include follow up if participation decreases or concerns are raised to discuss their situation and ensure that other care is provided if necessary)
• offers bi-annual picnics, with musical entertainment, that provides information on programs offered at the Kirk for people to be involved in (e.g., Habitat, KOALA, food bank)

4. Within two years, expand the diversity of mission programs (content, location, length, style, skill sets needed) such that 40% of church members of all ages are involved in at least one mission activity annually. This expansion should include but not be limited to:

a. partnering with other organizations (e.g., Urban Ministries, Safe Child, Wake County Mental Health)
b. informing congregation of specific needs
c. clinics

5. Eliminate building debt and develop guidelines regarding debt that could be assumed in the future.

6. Within one year, develop a master plan for the next phase of building, including timeline, capital funds initiative process, and estimate of cost, with a focus on renovation/replacement of Activities Building.

The Task Force will begin working with CE Adult as they plan for the College of Faith which will be held on Nov. 17. The event will have a special emphasis about practical ways to accomplish some of the long range goals of the Kirk. Please mark this on your calendar and look for future announcements from CE Adult.

We will provide updates when the group, task force, committee, etc., has been identified to lead a specific goal. As we continue with our work we ask that you review the goals selected, think about which goal energizes you and how you can get involved. Our mission has been identified, become a disciple of that mission.

-Long Range Planning Task Force
