Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends at the Kirk,

I hope that you, like me, have been enjoying the variety of worship services this summer. I was sorry to have missed the Gospel Sunday featuring the special singing of the Master's Men. This Sunday's service will have a contemplative theme. This will be a time to experience the presence of God in an atmosphere of peace and rest. In recent years, many have discovered this to be a powerful way to draw near to our God. I think of a classic quote from St. Augustine—“O Lord, you have made us for yourself. Our hearts are restless until they find rest in you.” This is a Sunday to “rest” in the Lord.

As we have experienced the variety of services, I am reminded of what someone called, “spiritual pathways.” A spiritual pathway has to do with the way we most naturally sense God’s presence and experience spiritual growth. There are several identified pathways: intellectual, relational, serving, worship, activist, creation and contemplative. The theory helps us understand why some people like contemplative worship and others prefer contemporary. It helps us understand why some of your fellow church members are passionate about small groups while others are passionate about service to the poor. It may help explain why different people are drawn to different activities in the life of the church or even to different congregations. Where we get into trouble, it seems to me, is when we think our pathway is the only pathway to God. Instead, we have a great opportunity to grow as we are open to new ways to experience God’s presence. We can also rejoice in the many different ways people find their connection with God.

As summer draws to a close we have been working hard on the fall ministries at the Kirk. I’m looking forward to Kick Off Sunday on August 26 when a new Sunday School year begins. It’s a great time to join a class if you are not a part of one. I’m very encouraged by the registration for the Disciple Bible Study. At the time of this writing, there are a few spaces open for the Wednesday evening class only. I’m especially excited about the new Wednesday Night Live starting September 5. It will be a time to share a meal with fellow members of the family. Many will want to stay for one of several classes being offered. See the details in the newsletter. I think you’ll enjoy it.

The Long Range Planning Committee has resumed their weekly meeting. The conversations of the summer are beginning to come to a close. I want to thank those who took the time to read the goals and share comments with the committee. I encourage you to read the goals and comments on the website. September 8 is the next big date when we select the strategic goals that will provide vision and direction for us in the coming years. I am looking forward to that meeting. Elders and key leaders of ministries are especially asked to attend and any member of the congregation will be welcomed.

Every week I am grateful for the many volunteers and leaders who give their time and energy to the ministry at the Kirk. As the song says, the church is not a building the church is people. Thank you to all who make this a healthy and happy place to serve.

Grace and Peace,

Jody

Mary Kay's Cary Days

Dear friends,

Thanks to you for sharing your many commments regarding the music of our summer worship services. We have been blessed in this community with rich resources! As I said on Sunday morning, as a newer resident of North Carolina coming from the Northeast just 2 1/2 years ago, I am so appreciative of leads and information that you choose to share with me. Again, thanks to Allison Connors for telling me about "The Master's Men"! I received a letter this morning from Don Mott thanking US for the pleasure of singing in worship this past week. We certainly enjoyed their fine musicianship, interesting arrangements and polished ensemble work. It was great to see such joyful singing.

This week we will be led in worship by the voices of David Wells and Amy Athavale in a service of contemplation. They will open with a duet by Mendelssohn and will cantor for several selections throughout the service. Laura Kaufman will be offering two flute selections also before she leaves to attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. I enjoyed filling in for Frank while he was on vacation last week, but he will have a busy morning on Sunday!

Next week Julia and Michelle Cobley will treat us in worship with some wonderful harp ensemble music. Remember that we will return to two services and they will be playing at both!

I am spending the next ten days putting finishing touches on preparations for the start-up of our fall programs. Much detailed information will come to interested parties before I leave for vacation on the 25th of August. Just a reminder that our rehearsals begin the week of Labor Day, the first week in September. Now that the contemporary ensemble, Psalm 150, is comfortably in place under Ken's leadership, I will be steering the Chancel Choir, as I was called here to do, into the direction of traditional choral worship music. This will include many newly composed pieces, as well as the occasional gospel/spiritual song. There will be childcare for ALL adult ensemble rehearsals, so do take advantage of it if needed. Please contact any of our directors for more information about music ministry programs here at the Kirk. They love to talk about our work here!

Enjoy the last remnants of summer!

Grace,

Mary Kay

CALLING ALL GOLFERS!

Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) is hosting its 7th annual Charity Golf Tournament, and we hope you will join us. The tournament will be held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club on Monday, September 17, 2007 with a shotgun start at 9:00. The format will be Captain's Choice with 2-person teams.

This is a great opportunity to play a spectacular course less than 10 miles south of downtown Raleigh (with a GPS system on each cart!), as well as make a difference in the lives of homeless families in Wake County. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to benefit our families at WIHN. The fee is $75 per player, of which $25 is tax deductible. This covers greens fees, cart, lunch, and prizes. If you don't golf, you could sponsor a hole or donate prizes. Deadline for registration is Friday, September 7.

For more information on this fun and rewarding event, call WIHN at 832-6024 or email ahwihn@aol.com.

The Bible from Scratch Class
Would you like to know more about the Bible? Does studying the Bible intimidate you? Would you like to feel more comfortable when you open the Bible? If so, you are invited to join a "Bible From Scratch" class.

We are offering two short-term classes this year. We will offer one short-term Sunday morning class (9:45 a.m.) on the New Testament. This class begins on September 23 in Room A-6 of the Activity Building. We will also be offering a class on the Old Testament as one of our Wednesday Night Live studies. This class will begin on September 12.

These classes are designed to be a guided tour through the Bible and to introduce basic tools and skills for Bible study. Participants will get a sense of the general “sweep” of the biblical story, including the major people and the chronology. There will be an opportunity to practice using basic Bible study tools such as concordances, Bible dictionaries and commentaries.

To register, please contact the church office (467-4944).

COMING THIS FALL!

Disciple Bible Study is an approach to Bible study that emphasizes disciplined reading and listening to Scripture. It is used in congregations among many denominations across the country. It results in biblically-nourished persons committed to live as disciples. The study is based upon a different theme each week which is explored through reading extended portions of scripture at home. In-class learning is accomplished through open discussion of Biblical issues and working in smaller groups to examine the meaning of the scripture for our discipleship. The Monday night class has been filled, but there are still a couple spots open in the Wednesday evening class. To sign up contact the church office (467-4944) or contact Cader Howard if you have questions. Deadline is Sunday, August 19.

Mission Matters

August Food Drive for Infants
During August, the Kirk is collecting food for the youngest of our community's hungry. Most food drives collect items that infants cannot eat, so we are targeting products intended for them. The proceeds will be taken to the Food Pantry, run by Urban Ministries of Wake County. Please bring formula (powdered or premixed), infant cereals, juices, fruits, vegetables, and meats in cardboard or plastic containers or in cans-no glass. There will be a collection box outside the office. Thank you for the gift of food.

Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

Long Range Planning
A disciple of Christ has a mission, but does Christ's mission have a disciple?

All goal options and commentary are posted on the Kirk's web site (Long Range Planning Information link). Please take time to review the goals and provide feedback as we are rapidly approaching the time for selection. For each goal option not only can you provide feedback, but you can rate the option. Rating is simple, just click on one of the buttons.

As you review and rate the goal options, please keep these three things in mind:

• Is the goal large enough?
• Is the goal strategic or tactical? In keeping with the idea of long range planning, we would look to implement strategic goals as opposed to tactical goals. Tactical goals are goals that enhance existing programs and can be deferred to the committee for action at a later date.
• Is the goal in keeping with the spirit of Jody's sermon on April 29, 2007, "Whose Voice Do You Hear?"

Please continue to pray for the taskforce and for the Kirk, congregation and staff, and that all of us will hear what God is calling us to be and do.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker

Wednesday Night Live!

Wednesday Night Live! kicks off in TWO weeks!

The Kirk’s new Wednesday Night Live! program will begin on September 5. The first night will be a fun get-to-know-you night. Jody will lead some fun games that all ages will enjoy!

A CATERED meal will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required. Reservations may be placed on Sunday at church or you may register by going to http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_attend_events&Itemid=102&task=view&id=3. If you would like to make a Standing Reservation, please check the box at the end of the form.

A variety of adult classes will be offered at 6:30. On Sept 5th, we will hear about the classes and most will begin the following week. There are four choices for adult classes:

- Disciple which is a year-long Bible study. Registration is required. The deadline for registering for this class is SUNDAY.

- The Old Testament from Scratch which is an 8-week overview of the Old Testament. If you feel that you are missing some of the foundational skills for using your Bible, this is a perfect class for you.

- Understanding Baptism which is a 3-week class on one of the sacraments of the church. We will talk about the history and various meanings of baptism. If you are coming from a different denomination or if you have (or will have) a child or grandchild baptized or if you want to learn more, this is a perfect class for you.

- Everything Scottish which is a class led by Steve Johnston, a resident Scottish aficionado. The class will also feature guests with many gifts to share. This is a class you won’t want to miss!

Children are invited to a crafts class and childcare will be provided for young children.
