Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends at the Kirk,

I continue to be grateful for the variety of worship services we are enjoying this summer at the Kirk. Last week I found the Healing and Wholeness service very moving as we brought before God our need for healing of that which is broken within us-- physically, spiritually and relationally. I am grateful for those who felt comfortable enough to come forward and share their requests for themselves or others. God’s loving Spirit was among us.

This week the theme of the service is Contemporary. I have enjoyed working with Mary Kay and Ken Purchase in preparing for this service. I thank Psalm 150 for their leadership in music. I think you will find this to be a wonderful time of praise and thanksgiving as we experience worship in a new way. In preparing myself for this service I discovered something. This “contemporary” service is actually very old. Come Sunday and see how this is true.

This Sunday will also be the last Sunday Susan Sexton is with us as our Summer Intern. I know I speak for many people when I say thank you Susan for your presence and ministry among us. We have been blessed. We wish her God’s blessing as she continues her studies at Union-PSCE.

This week the staff also gathered for our monthly strategic planning meeting. We looked ahead to the fall (which is not that far ahead). I was excited to discuss plans for the Wednesday Night Live starting in September. I am also preparing for the Disciple Bible Study and look forward to joining others in teaching that course. There are many, many opportunities at the Kirk to be involved and to serve. There are choirs, classes, small groups, mission opportunities and much more. I hope you will find the place God calls you for renewal and service. Let me or one of the staff know if you would like to talk more about those possibilities.

As the summer comes to a close, I am hoping you are finding some Sabbath-time of renewal. In my devotional reading I am reminded again and again of the movement Jesus and his followers make from a life of active service balanced with rest and renewal.

With thanks for you all,

Jody

"Team Up" With Wednesday Night Live!
Wednesday Night Live! will be starting September 5 which is "right around the corner." The program offers a catered meal to give the cook in the household the night off, but we still need warm bodies to collect money, set up the serving line, keep the ice bucket filled, run the dishwasher and straighten up afterwards.

We are now forming meal teams of four people each to fill this need. We would like to form four meal teams so that each team would only serve one Wednesday a month. And not to worry! Each team member will still be able to enjoy the meal and participate in a WNL program offering on the night they serve. Please contact Beth Williams if you are interested.

COMING THIS FALL!

Disciple Bible Study is an approach to Bible study that emphasizes disciplined reading and listening to Scripture. It is used in congregations among many denominations across the country. It results in biblically-nourished persons committed to live as disciples. The study is based upon a different theme each week which is explored through reading extended portions of scripture at home. In-class learning is accomplished through open discussion of Biblical issues and working in smaller groups to examine the meaning of the scripture for our discipleship. There will be information meetings held on Sunday, August 12 immediately following worship in the Session Room and on Wednesday, August 15 in Room M-18 off of the Fellowship Hall at 7:00 p.m. Please contact Cader Howard if you have questions.

Meet our Stephen Ministers

All of our many ministries and activities at the Kirk require people to accept the call to leadership to help ensure that God's mission has a voice. The Stephen Ministry program requires a core group of leaders to plan for training and continuing education, to connect those in need with those willing to be the listening Christian friend. Meet two of our five Stephen Leaders:

Sharon Welker has been a member of the Kirk for three years, and a Stephen Leader for one year. "As a Stephen Leader, I can help with the necessary background work to support those engaged in the one-on-one caring relationships. I appreciate the opportunity to grow in faith and service with others in this particular ministry."

Barbara Oliver has been a member of the Kirk for four years, and a Stephen Minister for three years. "At the time that Bill and I moved and joined the Kirk, I inquired about the meaning of the blue badges which said "Stephen Minister," and after having read the informational material in the pews, I decided to investigate becoming a Stephen Minister. I applied, and joined the next class being offered, and I have loved being a Stephen Minister--so much so that in June of 2006 I attended Stephen Leader Training in Orlando, Florida. I have loved every aspect of Stephen Ministry from being a Stephen Minister, being a Supervision Group Leader, and now being Stephen Leader and the Training Coordinator for the Kirk. I have found each role to be very fulfilling, and the program has contributed to my personal spiritual growth. How fortunate we are here at the Kirk to have the Stephen Ministry program, and I am grateful to be a part of such a ministry."

Mission Matters

Guatemala Fund-Raiser
The July fund-raiser was a great success. Thanks to everyone who participated by publicizing it (through brochures, posters, Minutes for Mission, e-mail blitzes, or items in the Krier and the bulletin), by making or collecting donations, and by setting up before, serving up during, or cleaning up after Sunday's ice cream social. (Put your hands together for the Sullivans, our connection to North Carolina's best peach ice cream!) You, the members of the Kirk, have recognized great need in Guatemala and have responded to it with great generosity.

So is it too late to make a donation? By no means. Although the collection center in the narthex has been taken down, donations can be left either in the offering plate during worship or in the church office during the week. Please make out checks to the Kirk. If you wish to support scholarships, please also write GSF on the memo line; if loans, GED.

August Food Drive for Infants
During August, the Kirk is collecting food for the youngest of our community's hungry. Most food drives collect items that infants cannot eat, so we are targeting products specifically for them. The proceeds will be taken to the Food Pantry, run by Urban Ministries of Wake County. Please bring formula (powdered or premixed), infant cereals, juices, fruits, vegetables, and meats in cardboard or plastic containers only-no glass. There will be a collection box outside the office. Thank you for the gift of food.

September Katrina Trip
There are still four openings for the September 23-29 mission trip to New Orleans. You must sign up by August 10. To do so, please contact Chris Mazzara.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Guatemala Mission Trip
Our next trip to Guatemala is scheduled for January 5 - 12, 2008 and we would like to take a group of 12 - 15 people. Anyone college-age and older is welcome to apply to accompany us. During the week, you grow closer to members of the Kirk, to new friends in a Christian community in Guatemala, grow spiritually and work on a project. People who go on these trips often return spiritually renewed and personally transformed with an increased vision for mission. Applications are available in the church office and must be submitted by August 12.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Hal Jordan or Virginia Anthony.

Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

A time to pray, discern, and comment upon the Goal Options.
This week’s option is Strengths to Build On

Goals for this week concern our Strengths and possibly building upon them. While this is the last of the options to be presented, the Task Force would still like to hear your comments.

June 3 - Worship
June 10 - Mission
June 17 - Education
June 24 - Aspirations
July 1 - Caregiving
July 8 - Facilities
July 15 - Improvements
July 22 - Member Involvement
July 29 - Staffing
August 5 - Strengths to Build On (Focus of the Week)

• Develop a comprehensive ministry for children, youth, and young adults to enable them to discern their call to ministry (i.e., medicine, ministry, education, etc.).

• Expand our refugee ministry such that more people are involved in the procedures and processes required to help refugees come to the Kirk, establish a home, find work, become enrolled in schools, if applicable, etc., and begin a new life in the United States.

• Within one year, develop a strategy to further the Kirk’s involvement of its congregation (youth and adults) in Presbytery.

Commentary on all goal options, as well as resources needed, secondary goals, and a place for
feedback can be found by going to the Kirk’s web page and click on Long Range Planning Information or by clicking on http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=104. We’d like for you to take a few minutes to share your thoughts and have any questions answered concerning the Goal Options with the Long Range Planning Committee. You may do this in person on Sunday mornings following the worship service by talking with the LRPC representative standing at the front of the sanctuary near the baptismal font. Of course you can also do this at the web site.

During this time of discernment, the congregation is asked to pray about the Goal Options. Pray that we may see God’s perspectives and that we may hear God’s mission for the Kirk. In a discernment period we try to align our future with God’s mission. Please pray for the Kirk, for each other, and for the Kirk to remain devoted to hearing God’s mission for our church and pray that we all become disciples of that mission.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker
