Susan Says....

Each day I am here at the Kirk I am amazed at the wonderful involvement and commitment of both the congregation and staff toward ministry in the faith community near and far. I am very grateful to be a part of the Kirk experience this summer, and also for the welcoming words from so many of you. Thank you

As we continue to focus on different worship experiences this summer here at the Kirk, I look forward to leading our Service for Healing and Wholeness on Sunday, July 29. The order for our service will be based on the service which is found in our Book of Common Worship.

The greatest challenge I face right now concerns my own understanding of healing and wholeness in our contemporary world, and how this relates scripturally. As we read the Bible, we know that healing was an essential part of Jesus' ministry. Jesus healed in many different ways, with and for people from all walks of life. Very often in today's culture, we view "healings" as "magic" or as an attempt to manipulate God rather than as a gift of the Holy Spirit.

I hope that you will come to this service with an openness to healing and wholeness that is given to us as individuals and as a church through the power of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps we can then see healing and wholeness as a journey toward our perfect relationship with God which we ultimately know through the perfect love of Jesus Christ.

Susan

COMING THIS FALL!

Disciple Bible Study an approach to Bible study that emphasizes disciplined reading and listening to Scripture. It is used in congregations among many denominations across the country. It results in biblically-nourished persons committed to live as disciples. The study is based upon a different theme each week which is explored through reading extended portions of scripture at home. In class learning is accomplished through open discussion of Biblical issues and working in smaller groups to examine the meaning of the scripture for our discipleship. The study begins this fall and more information is coming. Stay tuned to the bulletin and the Krier!

Needs & Wants

Meals On Wheels Volunteers Needed
We are in need of two volunteers for Meals on Wheels (each for different routes) on the 4th Wednesday of each month. The delivery of meals is in Cary, once per month, and it usually take about one hour. Meals are picked up at the Lutheran church off Kildaire Farms Road between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. All volunteers go with a partner who ends up being a friend - a great way to get to know new people. If you are interested in helping, please call or contact Patty Snow.

KOALA Staff Search Update
Our search for a new van driver continues. This person will be responsible for transporting students from Briarcliff Elementary School to the Kirk once a week, on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. The time commitment is a scant 45 minutes (2:45-3:30). Please note that KOALA volunteer training begins in September and that a driver has to be trained and seated behind the wheel by October. For more information about driving, contact Jerry Rhodes.

Kirk Joys & Concerns

Friends
I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciated the many prayers, calls, cards, and emails that you so generously shared as I recovered from surgery. David and I want to especially thank the Caregivers Committee, particularly Julie Bell and Carolee Nail for their help in coordinating the very helpful, not to mention, delicious meals. The past three weeks and more have been very busy for the many Kirk caregivers. Thanks to each of you for all you have done to help me and other Kirk families so recently. Grace and peace to all.

Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

A time to pray, discern, and comment upon the Goal Options.
This week’s option is Improvements

As we continue to discern God's will for the Kirk, this week we focus on options related to our general improvements. These options include:

July 15 Improvements (Focus of the Week)

• Reorganize the Session for the purpose of leadership (visioning and organizing toward visions) and reorganize the committees (or potential ministry teams) in a way to increase involvement of members in ministry.

• Within one year, develop a communication system that is appropriate for a 1,000 member church and includes multiple venues of communicating as well as via the Kirk web page.

• Within one year, develop additional men of the Kirk programs so that their specific needs and support are enhanced (much like Presbyterian Women and their Circles/Bible Study).

• Create a variety of fellowship/fun activities targeting young families so that church activities reflect the needs of this demographic. Also, there should be at least two fellowship/fun opportunities per year for the entire church to celebrate our life together.

Over the next few weeks our focus will be on the following areas:

July 22 Member Involvement

July 29 Staffing

August 5 Strengths to Build On

Commentary on all goal options, as well as resources needed, secondary goals, and a place for feed back can be found by going to the Kirk’s web page and click on Long Range Planning Information or by clicking on http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=104.

Please share your thoughts or have questions answered concerning the Goal Options with the Long Range Planning Committee representative standing at the front of the sanctuary near the baptismal font.

Please continue to pray about the Goal Options and that we may see God’s perspectives and hear God’s mission for the Kirk.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker

Mission Matters

Guatemala Fundraiser Update: July 10, 2007
Scholarships: We are hoping to provide ten scholarships per year with a three-year commitment. Scholarships are $ 400.00 per year. We need $ 12,000 to meet our goal. To date we have collected
$2,720.00.

Economic development: Our goal is to provide as many loans as possible with a minimum of $4000.00 for the first year with an additional $1000 for each of the next two years, $6,000 total. To date we have raised $1,390.00.

Thanks to all of you who have given and to those who haven't, please prayerfully consider doing so. A little money goes a long way in Guatemala.

Please plan also to attend the July 29 social on the porch after worship. Peach ice cream will be served by the bowl or cone, free of charge. You may also order half gallons to take home, at $6.00 a pop (of which $1.65 will benefit Palá). Half gallons, in peach and other flavors, have to be ordered by July 25. They can be picked up at the church between July 27 and July 29, or local delivery (in Cary and Apex) can be arranged. Call Deborah Sullivan from 8:30 to 5:00, Monday through Thursday.

Guatemala Mission Trip
Our next trip to Guatemala is scheduled for January 5 - 12, 2008 and we would like to take a group of 12 - 15 people. Anyone college age and older is welcome to apply to accompany us. During the week, you grow closer to members of the Kirk, to new friends in a Christian community in Guatemala, grow spiritually and work on a project. People who go on these trips often return spiritually renewed and personally transformed with an increased vision for mission.

We are hosting a session for those interested in joining this next trip in the Session Room on Wednesday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will last approximately one and a half hours (or less!). If you are not sure about mission travel, but think you might want to go, this is the perfect opportunity to hear what the trip involves. You are not required to attend an information session to apply to go on the trip.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Hal Jordan or Virginia Anthony.
