Steph's Stuff

This summer during each worship service we are focusing on a different topic or worship experience. Last Sunday we celebrated the environment and thought about our stewardship of God's resources. In the coming weeks, we will examine the problem of homelessness in our local area and the call of Christ in responding to it. We will worship with our brothers and sisters from Ethiopia. Later, we will have a Service of Healing and Wholeness, a contemplative service, a contemporary service and a gospel service. This Sunday we will be thinking about migrant farmworkers and the Christian response to them.

Imagine living in low-income housing, moving nearly monthly, working for more than twelve hours a day with crops that have pesticide residue on them. Imagine harvesting two tons of sweet potatoes to earn $50. There are over 100,000 people living in these conditions and yet they remain largely invisible. The issues surrounding migrant workers are deeply theological issues.

Our PC(USA) denomination continues to work diligently to improve the conditions of these H-2A guest workers who serve us. In the past few years, Presbyterians have worked along side the laborers to get better wages from Taco Bell, Mt Olive Pickles and Burger King. The effort has been successful and our brothers and sisters are now paid a few cent more per bushel.

As part of our focus on migrant workers this week a representative from the Student Action with Farmworkers will give a presentation during the 9:00 a.m. Sunday School hour. You are invited to come learn more about their ministry.

Stephanie

Exploring the Kirk Classes
Thinking about joining the Kirk or just want to learn more? Then consider becoming part of our next Exploring the Kirk Class. We'll talk about ministry opportunities and the Christian life, both in this congregation and in the Presbyterian (USA) denomination. It will be a great opportunity to meet other visitors and Kirk members, as well as a wonderful way to begin to discover different ways God might be calling you to participate in the life of this church.

The next Exploring the Kirk Class will meet in two parts on Sunday afternoons (July 15 and 22) from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Great Hall. This class is a prerequisite for membership at the Kirk. Please contact the church office (467-4944, kirkofkildaire@nc.rr.com) by Monday, July 9, to register or to request childcare. For more information, contact Cathy Church Norman (467-4944).

Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

A time to pray, discern, and comment upon the Goal Options

As we continue to discern God's will for the Kirk, this week we focus on options related to our facilities. These options include:

July 8 Facilities (Focus of the Week)

• Within one year, develop a master plan for the next phase of building, including timeline, capital funds initiative process, and estimate of cost, with a focus on renovation/replacement of Activities Building.
• Within one year, develop a master plan that strictly deals with the timeline to accomplish and funding necessary to:
˜renovate the Classroom Building and Great Hall
˜renovate the Fellowship Hall and replace associated, aging kitchen equipment.
• Find a viable, long-term solution that provides adequate parking for a growing congregation.
• Within two years, develop a plan for financing expansion of the office wing to add additional office and classroom space for staff and education.
• Develop plans for an off-site campus that maximizes the use of the primary facility and the quality of our programs as a means to address growth of the church and community.
• Explore and develop plans for a new church in Apex/Holly Springs area with a significant number of members of the Kirk (for example 75) committing to starting this church and remaining present for a minimum of 5 years.
• Within one year, analyze space and usage of existing facilities, local facilities, and technology to meet the needs to growing church programs without expensive renovations.

Over the next few weeks our focus will be on the following areas:

July 15 Improvements

July 22 Member Involvement

July 29 Staffing

August 5 Strengths to Build On

Commentary on all goal options, as well as resources needed, secondary goals, and a place for feed back can be found by going to the Kirk’s web page and click on Long Range Planning Information or by clicking on http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=104.

Please share your thoughts or have questions answered concerning the Goal Options with the Long Range Planning Committee representative standing at the front of the sanctuary near the baptismal font.

Please continue to pray about the Goal Options and that we may see God’s perspectives and hear God’s mission for the Kirk.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker

Mission Matters

Your Money in Missions
One of the Mission Committee's responsibilities during the year is to pay out benevolences (charitable donations) that the Kirk has budgeted for specific causes. Since this money comes from your pledges, we want you to know where it goes.
In July, Mission is paying out benevolences to two missionary families: $3,000 to the Turks, who work with the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar, and $3,000 to the Wisemans, who work with the National Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Guatemala. Elizabeth Turk's field is community health and family planning; her husband Dan's is forest management and orchard planting. (The Kirk's peach tree fund-raiser last July supported this work.) Jeannene and David Wiseman, formerly of Cary Presbyterian Church, help organize and host visits from PC(USA) members who seek to work with and learn from partner churches in Guatemala. The Wisemans played an important role in the formation of the Kirk's partnership with the community of Palá. David and Jeannene will come, along with Noe Sam of CESSMAQ (the Evangelical Committee on Service and Support of Maya Quiché Presbytery), to visit the Kirk and take part in worship during the first week of November 2007.
To find out more about the missionaries we support, visit www.pcusa.org/missionconnections/profiles. For the Turks, add /turkd.htm to the URL; for the Wisemans, add /wisemand.htm.

Scholarships, Mini-Loans, and Ice Cream
Fund-raising to provide scholarships and mini-loans for the people of Palá is off to a great start. Donations can be made at the Kirk office, in the narthex before and after worship, or in the collection plate during worship. Please write "Guatemalan scholarships" or "Guatemalan loans" on the memo line of your check.

Please plan also to attend the July 29 social on the porch after worship. Peach ice cream will be served by the bowl or cone, free of charge. You may also order half gallons to take home, at $6.00 a pop (of which $1.65 will benefit Palá). Half gallons, in peach and other flavors, have to be ordered by July 25. They can be picked up at the church between July 27 and July 29, or local delivery (in Cary and Apex) can be arranged. Call Deborah Sullivan, Monday through Thursday.

September Katrina Trip
There are still three openings for the September 23-29 mission trip to New Orleans. You must sign up by August 10. To do so, contact Chris Mazzara.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Guatemala Mission Trip
Our next trip to Guatemala is scheduled for January 5 - 12, 2008 and we would like to take a group of 12 - 15 people. Anyone college age and older is welcome to apply to accompany us. During the week, you grow closer to members of the Kirk, to new friends in a Christian community in Guatemala, grow spiritually and work on a project. People who go on these trips often return spiritually renewed and personally transformed with an increased vision for mission.

We are hosting a session for those interested in joining this next trip in the Session Room on Wednesday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will last approximately one and a half hours (or less!). If you are not sure about mission travel, but think you might want to go, this is the perfect opportunity to hear what the trip involves. You are not required to attend an information session to apply to go on the trip.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Hal Jordan or Virginia Anthony.
