Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends of the Kirk,

As you read this I am preparing to join the youth on their annual mission trip to Appalachia. I’m excited about the opportunity to join them and to get to know them. We will be in Man, WV with youth from First UMC in Cary. While I will enjoy the time with our youth, I will miss Vacation Bible School this year. It’s always a highlight. We also have a group heading out to the Massanetta Springs Middle School Conference. I am grateful to be serving a church who invests time, energy and money in the spiritual development of our children and youth. I love the ways that mission and spiritual nurture often come together. I want to thank the many, many volunteers that make it all possible. Looking way ahead, we are planning our next Guatemala Mission trip next January. There will be some informational sessions in July. See the Krier for details. I hope you will come and find out more about this opportunity.

The Long Range Planning Committee continues to work hard in developing the goals for you to consider. Please check out the website and make comments on specific goals. One of the important aspects of Long Range Planning is the conversation held among members as we share our dreams for the future. In some ways, that is as important as the product of choosing the final goals. I hope as you consider goals for the future you will keep this in mind: the main goal of the process is to discern God’s dream for the Kirk. This involves prayer and holy conversation. I continue to have in mind that phrase I shared with you earlier this year: “Christ’s Church has a mission but does Christ’s mission have a church.” The reason we exist is to carry on the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. The specifics are about where we sense Christ leading us to go in the years ahead.

I would enjoy hearing from you where you sense Christ is leading us.

Enjoying our ministry together,

Jody

Saturday Set-Up For VBS
On Saturday morning, we will be setting up the Fellowship Hall for Vacation Bible School. We would appreciate your help, if you have time. There is a wide variety of jobs-- decorating, moving items, organizing and much more. The start time is 9:00 a.m., but feel free to join whenever you can! Thank you!

Tents Needed for VBS
In a few days, the Fellowship Hall will be transformed into a marketplace. If you have picnic tents that we can borrow, that would be great. The kind that Harris Teeter sold a few years ago are wonderful, but others are also welcome-- including screened dining tents. We need them by Saturday, June 16. We promise to return them!

A - D: donuts, muffins, biscuits, bagels
E - S: eggs, meats, casseroles
R - Z: fruit

The Fellowship Committee will be on hand in the Fellowship Hall kitchen before worship if you would like to drop off your dish to keep it warmed or chilled.

Calling All Golfers!
Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) is hosting its seventh annual Charity Golf Tournament, and we hope you will join us. The tournament will be held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club on Monday, September 17, 2007 with a shotgun start at 9:00. The format will be Captain's Choice with 2-person teams.

This is a great opportunity to play a spectacular course less than 10 miles south of downtown Raleigh (with a GPS system on each cart!), as well as make a difference in the lives of homeless families in Wake County. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to benefit our families at WIHN. The fee is $75 per player, of which $25 is tax deductible. This covers greens fees, cart, lunch, and prizes. If you don't golf, you could sponsor a hole or donate prizes.

For more information on this fun and rewarding event, call WIHN at 832-6024 or email ahwihn@aol.com.

Mission Matters

Coming In July: The "Bank of Palá" And Ice Cream
In May the Session approved a partnership agreement with the Ray of Light Presbyterian Church in Palá, Guatemala, where the Kirk has sent two mission teams so far and plans to send more in January, 2008. One of the partnership's purposes is to improve economic conditions for the people of Palá, many of whom lost their livelihoods when Hurricane Stan destroyed their fields and homes in 2005.

The "Bank of Palá" is an initiative through which the Kirk will furnish the people of Palá with mini-loans to help them recover as farmers, weavers, and artisans skilled in other crafts. Throughout July, members of the Mission Committee and the Guatemala teams will be in the narthex before and after worship to collect donations for this initiative. If they wish, donors may sign their names on cutouts symbolizing the "Bank of Palá" and have them displayed in the narthex (as we did with peach cutouts during the orchard project for Madagascar last year).

Then, on July 29 after worship, there will be a social on the porch to celebrate the initiative and of course to fraternize over bowls of ice cream served with flair by Lynnie Sullivan and others. Please plan to take part!

Guatemala Mission Trip
It's exciting when dreams come true, and for many of our members that is what is happening these days at the Kirk. With the formation of a partnership between the Kirk and the Ray of Light Church in Pala', Guatemala, we will begin making regular international mission trips to this area like the one that 15 Kirk members took last July.

Our next trip to Guatemala is scheduled for January 5 - 12, 2008 where we will again work with PRESGOV and David and Jeannene Wiseman. We would like to take a group of 12 - 15 people. Anyone college age and older is welcome to apply to accompany us. During the week, you grow closer to members of the Kirk, to new friends in a Christian community in Guatemala, grow spiritually and work on a project. People who go on these trips often return spiritually renewed and personally transformed with an increased vision for mission.

We are hosting two information sessions for those interested in joining this next trip. The information sessions will be held in the Session Room on Sunday, July 1, at 4:00 p.m. or Wednesday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. Each meeting will last approximately one and a half hours (or less!). If you are not sure about mission travel, but think you might want to go, this is the perfect opportunity to come and hear what the trip involves. You are not required to attend an information session to apply to go on the trip.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Hal Jordan or Virginia Anthony.

Needs & Wants

What Can I Do To Help Kirk Youth?
At the Kirk "youth" are students in 6th-12th grades. We have opportunities for you to be involved with these students on Wednesday evenings, Sunday mornings, and Sunday evenings this fall.

We are holding two informational meetings for anyone who might like to help with youth. Both meetings are the same so choose the one that is best for your schedule. These are informational meetings and you are not obligating yourself to anything by coming. We just want to share opportunities with you.

The meetings will be Tuesday June 26 and Thursday July 12; both at 7:00 p.m. and both in room M-18 (classroom off of Fellowship Hall).

We especially hope parents of rising 6th and 9th graders and young adults without children will attend. Please join us to learn more about ways to help our Kirk youth grow in faith.

Photo Directory Update!
There is still a chance to be included...if we can get at least 20 more families to indicate interest, the photographer will come back again. If you would still like to sit for a portrait, please call Julie Sherk, or put your name on the list that is posted on the glass wall of the church office. Also, several of you have given me previous portraits, or told me they were forthcoming and that is great. However, after these, we will have to charge $5.00 per submitted family or individual photo to be included. We want our directory to be as complete as possible. If your photo does not appear in the directory, your family may have to pay to get a directory.

Group Photos - If your group would like to submit a photo there is still plenty of time to submit those - preferably by digital/email, to the address above.

Suggestions For Elder Nominees
The congregation is requested to submit names of nominees for the office of Elder for the class of 2010 (term from January 2008-December 2010). Officer training will be required. According to the Presbyterian Book of Order, "Elders should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment. Their manner in life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world." The committee also requires any candidate to be an active, pledging member of the Kirk; have demonstrated leadership in church activities; and have been a member long enough to know a substantial number of other Kirk members. You may copy the information below and send to a Committee Member, drop it in the offering plate on Sunday morning or leave in the church office. Please make your suggestions by July 1.

Nominating Committee members are: Gail Jordan (Chair), Lawson Rankin, Victoria Vojnovich, Kathy Mason, Jim Leonard, John Leonard, and Sallie Branch.

Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

A time to pray, discern and comment upon the Goal Options
The Long Range Planning Committee has been tasked with developing a long-range plan (4-5 year timeframe) for the Kirk. Through small group conversations, you, shared your dreams and visions for the Kirk. Through a series of meetings, the task force took those long dream lists and developed 44 possible goals (referred to as Goal Options, since all are options but not all will be chosen). Now it is time for the congregation to help the task force and other leaders discern which Goal Options are to be used in guiding the Kirk during the next few years.

After our discernment period, the list of goals will be whittled to a set of 5-8 goals to lead us on the mission God calls us to fulfill. The selection of the goals will occur in September (more information provided later) and be done by the elders, key leaders of the Kirk, and all interested members of the congregation. The meeting will be led by the task force and follow a specific process to choose the 5-8 goals from the list of options. These 5-8 goals will lead us on the mission God has called us to and will help us write the mission and vision statements for the Kirk.

The 44 Goal Options have been grouped into categories. Each week, we focus on one category, allowing us to pray, study, and talk about a subset of the “big picture.” Feel free to investigate all categories, but please pay specific attention to the Goal Options highlighted each week. Below is the order we are using for the categories, with the Goal Options for the highlighted week outlined:

June 3 Worship

June 10 Mission

June 17 Education (Focus of the Week)

June 24 Aspirations

July 1 Caregiving

July 8 Facilities

July 15 Improvements

July 22 Member Involvement

July 29 Staffing

August 5 Strengths to Build On

We’d like you to take a few minutes to share your thoughts and have any questions answered concerning the Goal Options with the Long Range Planning Committee. You may do this in person on Sunday mornings following either worship service by talking with the LRPC representative standing at the front of the sanctuary near the baptismal font. You may also provide feedback to the Long Range Planning Committee by going to the Kirk website, clicking on Long Range Planning Information and following the links. You can also go directly to the Long Range Planning page by clicking on http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=104.

During this time of discernment, the congregation is asked to pray about the Goal Options. Pray that we may see God’s perspectives and that we may hear God’s mission for the Kirk. In a discernment period we try to align our future with God’s mission. Please pray for the Kirk, for each other, and for the Kirk to remain devoted to hearing God’s mission for our church and pray that we all become disciples of that mission.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker

Meet Our Stephen Ministers

In addition to about 20 active Stephen Ministers, there are five people serving on the Stephen Leader team, doing the background, organizational work for the ministry. Kathy White has worked with Melanie Rankin to assume the role of referrals coordinator. When someone requests a Stephen Minister, Kathy will be the one who calls to discuss the need and to see if we have someone to provide the requested care.

Kathy White has been a member of the Kirk for 15 years and a Stephen Minister for one and a half years. "Stephen Ministry has become a vital ministry in the life of the Kirk and I am happy that I am a part of this caring group. It gives me an opportunity to share God's grace while giving hope, healing, encouragement, and joy to people in need in our congregation and community."
