Pastor on Call * * * * * * * * * * * * Sunday, June 3, 2007 Scripture Sermon * * * * * * * * * * * * Attendance Sunday, May 27:
* * * * * * * * * * * * Steph's StuffThe school year is winding down for most students and summer break is right around the corner. As I reflect on the Sunday school year, I am thankful for all of the people who have shared faith with the children and youth of the Kirk. This year we gave a challenge to the Faith Quest elementary children. We challenged them to memorize all of the memory verses for the year. If you walk in the Great Hall, you will see how well they have done. On the back wall, there are posters for each age group that are over-flowing with the names of children who have risen to the occasion! It is exciting to see so many children committing Bible verses to memory. In a few weeks, Vacation Bible School will take-over the church as it is transformed into a sea-side village. The kids will be immersed in Bible-times culture as they hear about Jesus' teachings and miracles. If you haven't been at the church while this is going on, I think you would be surprised at the transformation. In the Fellowship Hall, all of the tables and chairs are gone, replaced by tents, mats, rugs and crafts. The Narthex becomes a synagogue, complete with flowing tents, the Torah, and a Rabbi. All of the children and adults have Bible-time costumes to make the experience complete. Adult and youth volunteers are critical to making this a great program. With over 90 children already signed up, there are still places where volunteers are desperately needed. It is a rewarding experience to work with so many children. The Vacation Bible School team is specifically looking for people to lead recreation (there are fun, uncomplicated games to play with the children), people to be on the drama team (simple 5 minute skits), volunteers to be in the craft workshops (leading easy crafts that we supply for you) and people to be tribe leaders (guiding a small group of children). While we are always appreciative of all of our volunteers, we would really love to see new faces helping out-- particularly men, older adults and young people. If you are interested, please contact Patty Snow. Please pray for the children who will be attending, their families and the volunteers as we all learn about Jesus during this powerful experience. Stephanie

Throughout the summer we will have special themes for many of our worship services. The ASP Mission Team will lead a service. Our Ethiopian brothers and sisters have been asked to share in worship. Another service will highlight homelessness. A service will be designed around a healing and wholeness theme. We will have a Contemporary Worship Service, a Gospel Service and a Contemplative Service. So, stay tuned and join us.
Plans are also underway for Sunday morning classes that correspond with
many of these themes. Look for more information throughout the summer. |

This is a great opportunity to play a spectacular course less than 10 miles south of downtown Raleigh (with a GPS system on each cart!), as well as make a difference in the lives of homeless families in Wake County. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to benefit our families at WIHN. The fee is $75 per player, of which $25 is tax deductible. This covers greens fees, cart, lunch, and prizes. If you don't golf, you could sponsor a hole or donate prizes. For more information on this fun and rewarding event, call WIHN at 832-6024
or email ahwihn@aol.com. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

A time to pray, discern and comment upon the Goal Options We will follow an order for the conversations as there are 44 goal options to discern. We will focus on one area per week. June 3 - Worship (Focus of the Week) Why a new link and what is different about the goal option listing? The task force has modified the format to not only include the goal options but to see detail that includes commentary (based on feedback and input from small group conversations), resources (staffing, facilities, congregation), potential secondary goals, congregational feedback received to date, original goals, and a place for you to provide feedback to the task force. Why provide opportunities to talk to the task force? During this time of discernment, we believe that it is vital for you to have questions answered, share concerns, and provide feedback to a member of the task force who will share it with all task force members. It is also important for the task force to hear this information. We also want you to continue having conversations with each other. What is discernment and what are we discerning? From Discerning
Your Congregations Future, discernment means: During this time of discernment, we pray about the 44 goal options, options that are based on your dreams and visions for the Kirk. We pray and listen for what God's mission is for the Kirk and how we are to become disciples of that mission. Will we implement all 44 goal options? No. From the 44 goal options, only a few (5-8) will end up being chosen to lead us on the mission God calls us to fulfill. We hope you will take a few minutes out of your Sunday morning to share your thoughts with us. We also ask that you continue to pray for the Kirk and each other, and that we remain strong in hearing God's mission for our church and that we all become disciples of that mission. Grace and Peace,

Did you know that some people ask for a Stephen Minister for just a few weeks? Some of the caring relationships with a Stephen Minister last for 2-4 meetings and are just to help a person get through a temporary, but still difficult, time. Maybe you are coming home from the hospital and a Stephen Minister could provide another outlet for support as you adjust to a new health situation or wait on a broken bone to heal. Maybe you are feeling particularly sad about the empty nest or are worried about something that is going on with your child, and a Stephen Minister would listen in a non-judgmental way as you talk it all out. Think about asking for yourself or ask a friend if you could refer them when facing a little extra burden. Meet two of the Kirk's Stephen Ministers who will provide that supportive Christian care. Candy Elder has been a member of the Kirk for two and a quarter years and a Stephen Minister for two years. "Participating as a Stephen Minister in the Stephen Ministry program at Kirk of Kildaire has been a wonderful life experience for me. The original training was excellent, the supervision groups are supportive of Stephen Ministers as they provide care to others and the ongoing education programs enable continued learning for our caring ministry." Joe Keller has been a member of the Kirk for nine years and a Stephen Minister for one and half years. "Stephen Ministry is a perfect calling for me. It allows me the opportunity to use the gifts God gave me of being compassionate, caring and a good listener. The fact that my care receivers have allowed me to become a part of their lives has been just one of the rewards for me from the Stephen Ministry program."
