Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

Youth News

Welcome to Susan Sexton our Summer Intern

We are blessed to have Susan Sexton working with us at the Kirk. Susan will minister among us for 10 weeks this summer. She is assisting in worship this Sunday morning. Susan is a resident of Cary, a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh and a student at Union-PSCE in Richmond. Susan describes herself as “a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, friend, student, musician, volunteer, church member and classmate…I am a child of God seeking to live each day in loving relationship with others and with God.” Susan has a special sense of call for the ministry of Pastoral Care.

Please welcome Susan to the Kirk for the summer as she continues her study for ministry.

Steph's Stuff

The school year is winding down for most students and summer break is right around the corner. As I reflect on the Sunday school year, I am thankful for all of the people who have shared faith with the children and youth of the Kirk.

This year we gave a challenge to the Faith Quest elementary children. We challenged them to memorize all of the memory verses for the year. If you walk in the Great Hall, you will see how well they have done. On the back wall, there are posters for each age group that are over-flowing with the names of children who have risen to the occasion! It is exciting to see so many children committing Bible verses to memory.

In a few weeks, Vacation Bible School will take-over the church as it is transformed into a sea-side village. The kids will be immersed in Bible-times culture as they hear about Jesus' teachings and miracles. If you haven't been at the church while this is going on, I think you would be surprised at the transformation. In the Fellowship Hall, all of the tables and chairs are gone, replaced by tents, mats, rugs and crafts. The Narthex becomes a synagogue, complete with flowing tents, the Torah, and a Rabbi. All of the children and adults have Bible-time costumes to make the experience complete.

Adult and youth volunteers are critical to making this a great program. With over 90 children already signed up, there are still places where volunteers are desperately needed. It is a rewarding experience to work with so many children.

The Vacation Bible School team is specifically looking for people to lead recreation (there are fun, uncomplicated games to play with the children), people to be on the drama team (simple 5 minute skits), volunteers to be in the craft workshops (leading easy crafts that we supply for you) and people to be tribe leaders (guiding a small group of children).

While we are always appreciative of all of our volunteers, we would really love to see new faces helping out-- particularly men, older adults and young people. If you are interested, please contact Patty Snow.

Please pray for the children who will be attending, their families and the volunteers as we all learn about Jesus during this powerful experience.

Stephanie

SUMMER WORSHIP

Look for something special

Throughout the summer we will have special themes for many of our worship services. The ASP Mission Team will lead a service. Our Ethiopian brothers and sisters have been asked to share in worship. Another service will highlight homelessness. A service will be designed around a healing and wholeness theme. We will have a Contemporary Worship Service, a Gospel Service and a Contemplative Service. So, stay tuned and join us.

Plans are also underway for Sunday morning classes that correspond with many of these themes. Look for more information throughout the summer.

Calling All Golfers!
Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) is hosting its 7th annual Charity Golf Tournament, and we hope you will join us. The tournament will be held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club on Monday, September 17, 2007 with a shotgun start at 9:00. The format will be Captain's Choice with 2-person teams.

This is a great opportunity to play a spectacular course less than 10 miles south of downtown Raleigh (with a GPS system on each cart!), as well as make a difference in the lives of homeless families in Wake County. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to benefit our families at WIHN. The fee is $75 per player, of which $25 is tax deductible. This covers greens fees, cart, lunch, and prizes. If you don't golf, you could sponsor a hole or donate prizes.

For more information on this fun and rewarding event, call WIHN at 832-6024 or email ahwihn@aol.com.

Photo Directory Update!
There is still a chance to be included...if we can get at least 20-30 more families to indicate interest, the photographer will come back again. If you would still like to sit for a portrait, please call Julie Sherk or put your name on the list that is posted on the glass wall of the church office. Also, several of you have given me previous portraits, or told me they were forthcoming and that is great. However, after these, we will have to charge $5.00 per submitted family or individual photo to be included. We want our directory to be as complete as possible. If your photo does not appear in the directory, your family may have to pay to get a directory.

Group Photos - if your group would like to submit a photo there is still plenty of time to submit those - preferably by digital/email.

We Need Your Help For ASP Supplies
We are in the process of collecting supplies for our teams who will be going to ASP in June. Look for the signup board on the narthex patio the next few Sundays. Your donations need to be brought to the Fellowship Hall by Wednesday, June 13. Something new this year: the ASP Center Staff is collecting items for the local residents and invited us to help if we feel called to do so. Some of the items they asked for are bath linens, books and games (preschool to teenager - new or gently used), disposable diapers, and baby wipes and lotion. If you would like to donate any of these items, just leave them in the Fellowship Hall marked "ASP." Questions may be directed to Brenda Armstrong.

Volunteer to Serve as a Lector
Would you like to serve as a Lector? It's as easy as reading a prayer and a Bible passage at a Sunday morning service. The selections and instructions are provided by the Kirk office. Church members do not have to be Elders in order to serve. Please sign the Lector Schedule posted on the bulletin board in the office hallway, or call Carole Rhodes to volunteer. Youth, age 8th grade and older, may also sign-up.

Did You Borrow Dishes, Tablecloths, Etc.?
If you have borrowed any items from the Fellowship Hall kitchen, please return them? There is a missing punch bowl and many missing white tablecloths. These are needed for church functions. Also, if you take something from the Fellowship Hall kitchen, please return it back to that kitchen, not the kitchen off the Great Hall. Thank you.

Suggestions For Elder Nominees
The congregation is requested to submit names of nominees for the office of Elder for the class of 2010 (term from January 2008-December 2010). Officer training will be required. According to the Presbyterian Book of Order, "Elders should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment. Their manner in life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world." The committee also requires any candidate to be an active, pledging member of the Kirk; have demonstrated leadership in church activities; and have been a member long enough to know a substantial number of other Kirk members. You may copy the information below and send to a Committee Member, drop it in the offering plate on Sunday morning or leave in the church office. Please make your suggestions by July 1.

Nominating Committee members are: Gail Jordan (Chair), Lawson Rankin, Victoria Vojnovich, Kathy Mason, Jim Leonard, John Leonard, and Sallie Branch.

ELDER SUGGESTION
I suggest the name of __________________________________________________

Long Range Planning: It's Your Turn

A time to pray, discern and comment upon the Goal Options
This Sunday, June 3rd, and every Sunday thereafter for nine weeks, the Long Range Planning task force will have a representative at the front of the Sanctuary after each service to listen to your comments, answer questions, and hear concerns about the specific goal options for that week. We encourage you to read the goal options. They are located on the Kirk's web site and can be reached from the home page by clicking on Long Range Planning Information and following the links. You can also go directly to the Long Range Planning page by clicking on http://www.kirkofkildaire.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=104.

We will follow an order for the conversations as there are 44 goal options to discern. We will focus on one area per week.

June 3 - Worship (Focus of the Week)
June 10 - Mission
June 17 - Education
June 24 - Aspirations
July 1 - Caregiving
July 8 - Building Additions/Space Needs
July 15 - Improvements
July 22 - Member Involvement
July 29 - Staffing
August 5 - Strengths to Build On

Why a new link and what is different about the goal option listing? The task force has modified the format to not only include the goal options but to see detail that includes commentary (based on feedback and input from small group conversations), resources (staffing, facilities, congregation), potential secondary goals, congregational feedback received to date, original goals, and a place for you to provide feedback to the task force.

Why provide opportunities to talk to the task force? During this time of discernment, we believe that it is vital for you to have questions answered, share concerns, and provide feedback to a member of the task force who will share it with all task force members. It is also important for the task force to hear this information. We also want you to continue having conversations with each other.

What is discernment and what are we discerning? From Discerning Your Congregations Future, discernment means:
To "see" or to "know" what is. It is to see the movement of God, perhaps only in the dust kicked up by the wind. It is to see God's perspective. If this is so, then the discernment process is one of uncovering the decision, not of making it. The Spirit prays within us "with signs too deep for words." As we listen to the Spirit, those prayers begin to surface into our consciousness.

During this time of discernment, we pray about the 44 goal options, options that are based on your dreams and visions for the Kirk. We pray and listen for what God's mission is for the Kirk and how we are to become disciples of that mission.

Will we implement all 44 goal options? No. From the 44 goal options, only a few (5-8) will end up being chosen to lead us on the mission God calls us to fulfill.

We hope you will take a few minutes out of your Sunday morning to share your thoughts with us. We also ask that you continue to pray for the Kirk and each other, and that we remain strong in hearing God's mission for our church and that we all become disciples of that mission.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker

Meet our Stephen Ministers

Did you know that some people ask for a Stephen Minister for just a few weeks? Some of the caring relationships with a Stephen Minister last for 2-4 meetings and are just to help a person get through a temporary, but still difficult, time. Maybe you are coming home from the hospital and a Stephen Minister could provide another outlet for support as you adjust to a new health situation or wait on a broken bone to heal. Maybe you are feeling particularly sad about the empty nest or are worried about something that is going on with your child, and a Stephen Minister would listen in a non-judgmental way as you talk it all out. Think about asking for yourself or ask a friend if you could refer them when facing a little extra burden. Meet two of the Kirk's Stephen Ministers who will provide that supportive Christian care.

Candy Elder has been a member of the Kirk for two and a quarter years and a Stephen Minister for two years. "Participating as a Stephen Minister in the Stephen Ministry program at Kirk of Kildaire has been a wonderful life experience for me. The original training was excellent, the supervision groups are supportive of Stephen Ministers as they provide care to others and the ongoing education programs enable continued learning for our caring ministry."

Joe Keller has been a member of the Kirk for nine years and a Stephen Minister for one and half years. "Stephen Ministry is a perfect calling for me. It allows me the opportunity to use the gifts God gave me of being compassionate, caring and a good listener. The fact that my care receivers have allowed me to become a part of their lives has been just one of the rewards for me from the Stephen Ministry program."
