Pentecost Offering

The Pentecost Offering will be received this Sunday, May 27. In a nutshell, this offering provides a way to "meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults" (www.pcusa.org/pentecost). From what is received, 60% is channeled through the Presbytery to the General Assembly, which uses the money to create "leadership development opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults" and to fund "children-at-risk programs at the national level." The other 40% is sent to a recipient designated by the Kirk's class of confirmands. This year's recipient is the Salvation Army's Women and Children's Emergency Shelter (for more information, go to www.keepthebellringing.org/clients/clients.html, then scroll down to "Emergency Shelter for Women and Children"). Look for the insert and envelope in your bulletin on Sunday, and please give generously.

Jody's Journal

Dear Friends,

This Sunday is Pentecost—when the church remembers it was created by the intention of God through the gift of the Holy Spirit. This Sunday we will remember the way God worked in the life of the Kirk. We are also asking you to wear RED because red is the color that symbolizes the gift of the Spirit. We have special liturgy planned for the celebration. I hope to see you on Sunday.

Our Summer Intern, Susan Sexton will begin her work on Tuesday, May 29. The Library will serve as her office. Please come by to greet her. She will be assisting in worship on June 3.

At the Session Meeting last Sunday night we were reminded of the importance of theological education as we heard a request for support for Union-PSCE. Presbyterians are proud of our tradition of having educated clergy in leadership. We believe that the mind is a gift of God that is to be nurtured and developed and used for the work of faith. (You've probably heard, A mind is a terrible thing to waste.) Presbyterians might say it is sinful to waste such a gift. We remembered that one of our own, Lindsey Wells Peery, graduated from Union-PSCE this year and another member, Catherine Devins, is currently attending. Katelyn Gordon is at Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Throughout the years the Kirk has become a place where people have felt called to seminary as they sense God’s call to serve the church.

At the Session Meeting we also approved a three-year partnership with brothers and sisters in Guatemala. You will hear much more about this in the coming weeks as we develop relationships of mutual care and support with Christian brothers and sisters in Pala.

In June I’ll be joining the youth on their ASP Mission trip to Man, WV. (If you look it up on google maps, you see it is very isolated!) I look forward to sharing in this experience with our youth and to be of service in mission. One of my goals is to participate over time in events, trips and retreats that connect me more closely with members of the Kirk. I have found this to be the best way to build relationships with fellow church members. I recommend it to all.

Long Range Planning continues its work of reviewing and revising goals. See the webpage link. They encourage your response, reflections and prayers. They are promising and exciting goals. In September, we will begin to make critical decisions about directions for the Kirk. Please hold the committee, the goals and the process in prayer.

With gratitude for you,

Jody

SUMMER WORSHIP

Look for something special

Throughout the summer we will be having special themes for many of the services. The ASP Mission Team will lead a service. Our Ethiopian brothers and sisters have been asked to share in worship. Another service will highlight homelessness. A service will be designed around a healing and wholeness theme. We will have a Contemporary Worship Service, a Gospel Service and a Contemplative Service. So, stay tuned and join us.

Plans are also in the work for Sunday morning special classes to go along with many of those themes. Look for those as well.

We Need Your Help For ASP Supplies
We are in the process of collecting supplies for our teams who will be going to ASP in June. Look for the signup board on the porch the next few Sundays. Your donations need to be brought to the Fellowship Hall by Wednesday, June 13. Something new this year: the ASP Center Staff is collecting items for the local residents and invited us to help if we felt called to do so. Some of the items they asked for are bath linens, books and games (preschool to teenager), disposable diapers, and baby wipes and lotion. If you would like to donate any of these items, just leave them in the Fellowship Hall marked "ASP." Questions may be directed to Brenda Armstrong.

Did You Borrow Dishes, Tablecloths, Etc.?
If you have borrowed any items from the Fellowship Hall kitchen, please return them? There is a missing punch bowl and many missing white tablecloths. These are needed for church functions. Also, if you take something from the Fellowship Hall kitchen, please return it back to that kitchen, not the kitchen off the Great Hall. Thank you.

Turn In Your Old Printer Ink Cartridges
A collection box has been placed in the Great Hall kitchen for old ink cartridges of any kind. The collection box is picked up monthly and the Kirk receives funds for all returned cartridges. It's an easy way to get rid of your cartridges and for the Kirk to make a few extra dollars.

We encourage you to go to the Kirk's web site and click on Long Range Planning Information and follow the links to the goal options. The order we will follow for these conversations is:

We hope you will take a few minutes out of your Sunday morning to share your thoughts with us. We also ask that you continue to pray for the Kirk and each other, and that we remain strong in determining Christ's mission for our church and that we all become disciples of that mission.

Grace and Peace,
Amy Woynicz, Craig Nygard, Larry Nielsen, Lisa Miller, Don Stephenson, and Jody Welker

Photo Directory Update

Photo Directory Update!
There is still a chance to be included...if we can get at least 20-30 more families to indicate interest, the photographer will come back again. If you would still like to sit for a portrait, please contact Julie Sherk or put your name on the list that is posted on the glass wall of the church office. Also, several of you have given me previous portraits, or told me they were forthcoming and that is great. However, after these, we will have to charge $5.00 per submitted family or individual photo to be included. We want our directory to be as complete as possible. If your photo does not appear in the directory, your family may have to pay to get a directory.

Group Photos - if your group would like to submit a photo there is still plenty of time to submit those - preferably by digital/email, contact Julie Sherk.

Meet our Stephen Ministers

Stephen Ministers support one another during their bi-weekly meetings. Stephen Ministers are very protective of the confidential nature of the ministry. In all meetings related to supporting our efforts to provide the best care possible, Stephen Ministers refer only to their Care Receiver (never a name), and never share specific details. Meet two of our active Stephen Ministers:

Kathie Bell has been a member of the Kirk for four years and a Stephen Minister for three. "For me, Stephen Ministry is a process in which my Care Receiver and I work and pray together to solve her problem(s). This said, it means sharing our deepest feelings and our faith, giving our problem to God, and letting go of it! My supervision group will listen to the general nature of the problem, make suggestions, and pray with and for my care receiver and me.

In our professional lives we are taught to fix the problem. In Stephen Ministry, we realize that we cannot fix everything, nor are we intended to - so we turn it over to the Lord (and when you give Him the problem that means you release it completely to Him). Stephen Ministry is also a growth experience in patience. God's answer(s) may take longer than we hope, or be quite different than what we want at the moment. We learn to trust completely in His infinite wisdom as we work together with our brothers and sisters in Christ."

Harlanette Harrison has been a member of the Kirk for seven and a half years and a Stephen Minister for a one and a half years. "Stephen Ministry provides me with the opportunity to lend support and encouragement to others. I receive much satisfaction and new friends in return."

Teenagers

The WNL program is looking for some youth who would like to join the team to plan this new event. Please join!

Montreat

There is a required meeting for all youth and a parent is June 3, at noon in Fellowship Hall. We still have not found another male chaperone. One possibility is for two men to split the week. If you are able to do this, please contact Nancy Stokes as soon as possible. If no one is able to do this, the oldest boys who have signed up will have priority and the younger boys will not be able to attend this year. We hope that will not have to happen. Please consider going to Montreat.
