Jody's Journal

Dear Family and Friends of the Kirk,

I have been reading the notes made in our Long Range Planning small group meetings. I am very grateful that over 130 of the Kirk members participated. Thank you. It will take all of us some time to digest the comments. They reveal a rich diversity of people present in the life of the Kirk. They also reveal that we are at a healthy place in our life together. The small group conversations are also a wonderful way for us to prepare for the coming of Roy Oswald on Friday night, March 16, and Saturday morning, March 17. Roy is coming to lead the congregation through a time of conversation that leads to goal setting for the coming 4-5 years. That tells you that this is a very important meeting as those who attend will have an opportunity to shape the direction we will be heading into the future. Please read the article in the newsletter and sign up for the event.

This coming Sunday will be special because it is Youth Sunday. The youth have been preparing to lead the entire service. We are blessed to have gifted youth at the Kirk. I know the service will be a blessing to all who attend.

I’m enjoying Lent at the Kirk for many reasons. I’m especially grateful to Mary Kay for leading the Wednesday "Sounds of the Spirit" service of meditation through music at 12:10 p.m. It is followed by a good lunch with good fellowship. I’m also enjoying the “Discerning God’s Will” class on Tuesdays. It has led me to think even more deeply about how faith can help us in decision making. Most of all I am thankful for those who participate. I find myself energized by the presence of those who attend. Thank you.

It’s a busy season at the Kirk and also a blessed one. I hope you are finding this to be a time when you remember once again how “God so loved the world.”

Grace and Peace,

Jody

Can you sew?
We are expecting another huge increase in the number of children we enroll in Vacation Bible School this year. One of the exciting parts of the week is that each child and adult wears a costume to make a more authentic experience of life in Jesus' day.

Our costume supply is running low! If you can sew, we'd love your help! The pattern is simple enough for even a beginning sewing student. We'll supply instructions and fabric! Please contact Patty Snow to volunteer.

New KOALA Staff Needed
The Kirk Outreach Afterschool Learning Academy (KOALA), which provides one-on-one tutoring to local children in grades K-2 is still looking for a new liaison for the 2007-2008 academic year. The time commitment is flexible, but usually 2-5 hours per week. For more information, contact Stephanie Horman.

KOALA is also looking for a new van driver to take students from Briarcliff to the Kirk one afternoon a week, either Tuesday or Thursday, beginning in October. The time commitment is about 45 minutes (2:45-3:30). For more information, contact Jerry Rhodes.

Both of these positions are very important; the program can scarcely run without them. Please help if you are able. Thanks!

Your Money in Missions
One of the Mission Committee's responsibilities during the year is to pay out benevolences (charitable donations) that the Kirk has budgeted for specific causes. Since this money comes from your pledges - we want you to know where it goes.

In March, Mission is paying out the first installment of the benevolence budgeted for the Alliance Medical Ministry, a faith-led ministry that has provided affordable primary care to working-poor families of Wake County since 2003. These families generally earn less than $25,000 annually and lack health insurance. Alliance depends on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and congregations to serve its target population. Out of your pledges, Alliance will receive $2,000 this month (of a budgeted $6,000). On February 18 the News and Observer named Alliance's executive director, Dr. Susan Weaver, "Tar Heel of the Week." For the story, go to www.newsobserver.com/692/story/544603.html. For more information about Alliance, visit its Web site at www.alliancemedicalministry.org.

Roy Oswald Coming To The Kirk

Long Range Planning Event

Sign Up Now!

We are welcoming Roy Oswald from the Alban Institute to join in the Long Range Planning conversation on March 16th and 17th. The congregation is invited to both of two sessions:

Friday, March 16, 2007, beginning at 6:00 PM - Congregation Dinner and Evening of Discovering Norms

Roy will lead us through identifying norms of the Kirk. To kick off this fun and productive time, we will have a congregation dinner, so please let the office know of your intention to come (see below). Childcare and Glenaire transportation provided.

Saturday, March 17, 2007, beginning at 9:00 AM - Goal Creation and Prioritization

Roy will walk us through establishing goals that have come out of the small group discussions and our evening of identifying norms. We will be writing up goal options for our period of discernment. Childcare and Glenaire transportation provided.

The taskforce encourages you to attend both events as they are designed to work together and build on the information gained Friday evening.

Please RSVP by March 11, 2007 so that we are able to provide enough dinner for everyone. RSVP to kirkofkildaire@nc.rr.com or call the Church Office at 467-4944. Be sure to include your needs for childcare and transportation from Glenaire.

Kirk Photo Directoryl

Say Cheese! New Kirk Photo Directory Coming
It is time for a new Kirk photo directory, and we need your help to make it complete! We have grown so much that this is a great resource to help us connect the many names and faces we see each week. There is no
obligation to buy portraits, (though they offer several poses and finishes, and a photo CD option) and you will receive a complimentary 8x10 photo just for participating!

The photographer will be here March 20-24 and March 27-31. Sign-up sheets are in the narthex on Sundays or stop by the table during the week. If you have any questions, please contact Julie Sherk.

If you are interested in getting involved with the coordination/distribution of this directory and/or with greeting the families at the sessions, contact Julie Sherk.
