Nancy's Notes

This year, Youth Sunday is March 11 and this is a time when youth are most visible at the Kirk. Youth plan and lead worship, provide music, usher, greet, and even design the bulletin cover that day. It is easy to assume that the entire Kirk youth program is visible on Youth Sunday.

However, Youth Sunday is "just the tip of the iceberg" of Kirk youth programs. The term youth at the Kirk refers to students in 6th-12th grades and there are many youth activities that are not as visible as Youth Sunday, but are just as vital and meaningful.

Two weeks ago 75 youth enjoyed a retreat in the Virginia Mountains and there is also a fall retreat each September. Three weeks from now 20 youth will go to Washington DC to serve the homeless. Another group of 30 youth are preparing to minister in Logan County, WV as part of Appalachia Service Project in June.

Sunday evening youth group includes food, fellowship, singing, devotions, and service such as cooking for Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network and the Helen Wright Center. Youth on Sunday nights have also collected food for the Food Bank, packed "goodie" boxes for college students, studied inclusiveness, and shared communion this year.

Sunday mornings are busy, too. Youth lead music in worship with handbells and solos, and by serving as acolytes, ushers, and lectors. The sixth and seventh grade class is called Faith Challenge and utilizes active learning in 5-week rotations to learn about God's work throughout the Bible. There are approximately 30 youth meeting regularly with their mentors, attending class weekly, and serving others in preparation for confirmation in May. The high school class includes fellowship, lively discussions, Bible study, and prayer with 15 or more students each week.

So when you see the youth on Youth Sunday, remember there are many other youth learning, serving, leading, and sharing at other times and in other locations, too.

Mary Kay's Cary Days

Dear friends,

It’s Wednesday afternoon and I have just come from enjoying a delicious lunch of chili and cornbread prepared here at the Kirk and offered after our lunchtime music and meditations called "Sounds of the Spirit" for Lenten Wednesdays. A special thanks to the K-group including Allison Connors, Ann Grundstrom, Annette Homiller, Cindy Wagner, Jennifer Leonard, Julie Bell, Kathy Keller, Robin Shannon, Vicki Bloch and Kathy Earley. They prepared and served our lunch and will continue to do so for several more Lenten weeks. Next week’s menu is Brunswick stew, biscuits and dessert. We still could use another group of persons to do lunches on March 21 and April 4. Come and enjoy a reading from Psalms and music to feed your soul!

This week during worship, the "Psalm 150" Ensemble will lead the musical selections at the 9:00 a.m. service. They invite you to join in a sing-along beginning at 8:40 a.m. to learn and enjoy some new contemporary songs. Members of this group include Robert Babb, Janet Barclay, Peggy Booth, Shelly Bowser, Bill Boyle, Ellen Boyle, Paul Hamilton, Phil Hamilton, Amy Huenemann, Ken Purchase and David Wells. They are in need of a keyboardist comfortable with contemporary style as well as additional instrumentalists. Please contact Ken Purchase if you are interested. Ellen Boyle will be singing “Would they love Him down in Shreveport?” at this service also. It’s great to hear all styles of music here at the Kirk!

During the 11:00 a.m. worship our children and youth handbell ensembles will be playing. The Genesis ringers are offering a communion selection entitled “Bread of the World in Mercy Broken,” while the Coventry Ringers will accompany us in singing the opening hymn this day. The Coventry “6” Ringers, an ensemble of the high school ringers, will be playing “Tis The Gift to Be Simple” as an offertory. Chancel Choir will be singing a medley of favorite “cross” songs as we continue in the spirit of Lent.

Any singers interested in joining any of our choirs, please feel free to speak to any ensemble member. Our rehearsals are open to all!

Wishing you a wonderful week!

Peace,
Mary Kay

Roy Oswald
Consultant with the Alban Institute
coming to the Kirk March 16-17, 2007.

Friday, March 16, 2007, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with dinner provided, Roy will lead us through identifying norms of the Kirk. We will identify some of the unwritten rules we live by in the Kirk related to children, men and women, conflict (how you disagree), expectations of members, money, treatment of clergy and staff, who is welcome here, use of the building, etc. It will be a fun evening, and we will learn a lot.

Saturday, March 17, 2007, beginning at 9:00 a.m., Roy will walk us through establishing goals that have come out of the small group discussions and our evening of identifying norms. We will be piling up goal options for our period of discernment.

The taskforce encourages you to attend both events as they are designed to work together and build on the information gained Friday evening. Please RSVP by March 10, 2007 so that we are able to provide enough dinner for everyone on Friday evening. RSVP to the Church Office (467-4944 or kirkofkildaire@nc.rr.com).

Open Your Heart And Home To A Wonderful New Adventure
Youth for Understanding USA is looking for warm, active people who are willing to open their hearts and homes to host an exceptional young person from abroad for the 2007-2008 academic year. There are high school students available from all over the world, all ready to begin their exchange experience with the person, couple or family who would welcome them. Host families of previous years often testify that hosting has brought them closer together. The Segreti family have hosted a girl from China and the Buning family a boy from Latvia. Why not open your home and bring the world a little bit closer?

Or do you have a high school student that is 15 to 18 years old that would like to experience another county/language. Programs available for semester, summer and a year-long experience. Looks great on a college resume. If you are interested and/or have questions about hosting, please call Mike and Laurel Callis at (919) 387-8003, or visit the website at www.yfu-usa.org.

It is time for a new Kirk photo directory, and we need your help to make it complete! We have grown so much that this is a great resource to help us connect the many names and faces we see each week. There is no
obligation to buy portraits, (though they offer several poses and finishes, and a photo CD option) and you will receive a complimentary 8x10 photo just for participating!

The photographer will be here March 20-24 and March 27-31. Sign-up sheets are in the narthex on Sundays or stop by the table during the week. If you have any questions, please contact Julie Sherk.

If you are interested in getting involved with the coordination/distribution of this directory and/or with greeting the families at the sessions, contact Julie Sherk.
