FAITH CHALLENGE

Kings and Prophets

Elijah and Josiah—5th week

Scripture:          1 Kings 18, 2 Kings 22-23

Memory Verses:     The Father has the power to give life.  John 5:26.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.  Psalm 119:105

Concepts:

·       God is the giver of all life.

·       Being faithful to God means depending only on God

·       A prophet is someone who calls people back to faithful obedience to God.

·       God holds us accountable for our unfaithfulness

·       Scripture teaches us who God is, our relationship with God, and how we are to respond to God, as individuals and as a group.

Objectives

Gathering Time: (Guide and Coach)

1.     At the beginning of each class, the Coach greets arriving students and supervises snacks.

2.     The Guide and Coach remind students to write prayer joys and concerns on the Prayer Wall and to place their offering in the offering jars.

Workshop Lesson Procedure: (Guide takes over from here)

Scripture/Bible Story:

  1. After most students have arrived and snacks are ended call the class to order and ask all to sit down.  NOTE:  The music/dance group will need plenty of time this morning, so extra time should not be spent on welcome and snacks.

  1. Ask students to provide a quick overview of the story of Elijah.  The guide who led this lesson can make any additions or corrections to what the students say.

  1. While still discussing Elijah, ask the class to repeat the memory verse from this lesson “The Father has the power to give life.”  John 5:26.  Ask how this ties in with Elijah?  God answered Elijah’s prayers, provided the fire for the alter, and later provided rain to end the drought and water for all living things.

  1. Ask students to summarize the story of Josiah. The guide who led this lesson can make any additions or corrections to what the students say.

  1. While still discussing Josiah, ask the class to repeat the memory verse from that lesson. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  Psalm 119:105  Ask how this ties in with Josiah?  The Book of God’s Laws that was found during Josiah’s reign told Josiah and all the people how they were to live.  God’s word was a light for their lives.

Application:

1.     At this point, explain the students may choose between two options for the remainder of the class.  One group will focus on music and dance and will prepare a liturgical dance.  The other group will prepare a “Kings’ Report Card” and play pictionary.  Ask students to choose which group interests them.  One guide and at least one coach should move with the pictionary group to the “country” room.  The music/dance group will stay in the “city” room.

2.     A dance instructor, will work with the group that has chosen music/dance.  She will teach them a liturgical dance to the Amy Grant song titled “Thy Word” which is the memory verse for the Josiah lessons.  Because the lesson writer is not experienced with dance, no further music/dance instructions will be provided here.  The dance instructor will direct that activity without further instruction.  The instructions below are for the pictionary/report card group.

3.     Pass out the attached “Kings’ Report Card” along with CEV Bibles.  Allow groups of 2-3 students to complete the report card.

4.     When most have finished, review the correct answers.  Make particular note of the correct answers for the two questions beneath the report card.  Kings were judged as good if they directed the people toward God and were bad if they worshipped false gods and lead the people away from God.    Prophets remind people what God expects of them.

5.     Depending on the size of the group, either divide into two teams for pictionary, or stay as one group.  Have the words below written on index cards.  Ask someone to come forward and choose a card.  After they have read the card, they are to draw clues on the dry erase board so their teammates can guess the word written on the card.  The scorekeeper will time how long it takes for the team to correctly say the word on the card.  Repeat as many times as desired.  The team with the lowest score (shortest cumulative time), wins.

6.     The guide may provide Hershey kisses, Starburst candy or something similar to the winning team, if desired.

Closing (Coach):

1.     The coach in each room conducts the closing prayer time with the prayer chain in that room.

2.     Close/lock the door and turn off the lights.

Guide preparation in advance:

·        Post the memory verses from both lessons.

·        Make approximately 10 copies of the “Kings’ Report Cards”

·        Write pictionary words on index cards

Supply List

·        CD player with Amy Grant CD in “city” room for the music/dance group

·        Two dry erase markers, erasers, and pictionary index cards in the “country” room

·        Pencils, clipboards, CEV Bibles

·        Reward candy for pictionary if desired
