Gathering Time/Introduction: (Coach)

1.      The Coach leads the opening routine: snack, fellowship, Prayer Wall activity, and Prayer Chain.  Name tags are available.

2.      Introduce the guide who leads the workshop lesson.

Workshop Lesson Procedure: (Guide takes over from here)

Scripture/Application

1.      David Wells will be attending the beginning of this class to lead the memory verse in song.  He will bring his guitar and teach the song.  As soon as the class seems assembled, call the class to order, introduce David and he will spend 5-10 minutes with the class in song.

2.      After David is finished, ask the class what part of the David story they think is related to this song.  At this point, accept most answers—because asking God to create a clean heart in us is appropriate at anytime.  Today’s  lesson is on David and Bathsheba and  by the end of the morning, it is hoped the youth can clearly see that these words might have been what David wrote after he realized his sin before God.

3.      Pass out Bibles and ask the class to turn to 2 Samuel 11-12:25.  Ask students to spend a few minutes skimming and reviewing the story of David and Bathsheba.  Ask the class together to retell the story as you make notes on the dry erase board.  Be sure the following points are mentioned.  This does not need to be a lengthy review—but just to assure that all students are familiar with the story.

·         David commits adultery with Bathsheba and she becomes pregnant

·         David hopes to “cover” his sin by bringing Uriah home

·         Uriah reports to King David, but will not spend time with his wife

·         David sends Uriah back to the battle with secret instructions that Uriah should be placed at the front of the battle where he will most likely be killed

·         Uriah dies

·         David marries Bathsheba

·         Nathan reveals David’s sin

·         David asks God’s forgiveness

·         God forgives David, but there will be consequences (baby dies and David’s family will be in turmoil)

·         Solomon is born

4.      Continue the discussion with the following questions:

·         What can we learn about God from this story?  God forgives.  God judges us.  God expects us to keep the commandments.

·         What can we learn that applies to us today?   There are always consequences for every action/choice.  Even though God forgives us, we still must suffer the consequences of our choices.

5.      Recall that in lesson 3, the class discussed psalms.  Ask “What is a psalm?”  Acceptable answers are: a kind of prayer;  psalms  usually express strong emotions such as joy, thanksgiving, sadness, or fear.  Who was a famous psalm-writer?  David

6.      Point out that they have observed two types of “psalms” today—written (memory verse) and sung (with David Wells).  Now students will create their own “psalm”.  Allow students to work individually or in groups no larger than three.  Ask them to spend several minutes creating a “psalm”.  Examples might be:

·         A dance (Let them hear the “Celtic Psalms” CD and choose one to create a dance to).

·         A written psalm of their own that expresses thanksgiving, fear, sorrow, or joy over something happening in their own lives.

·         A picture that illustrates the psalm or a scene from David’s life that relates to the psalm.

·         A modern-day skit depicting a situation that the psalm fits.

7.      Ask each group to share their psalm creations

8.      End by saying or singing Psalm 51:10 together.

Closing (Coach):

1.      The Coach conducts the closing prayer time.

2.      Close/lock the door and turn off the lights.

Guide preparation in advance:

1.      For questions on this lesson plan, call Nancy Stokes, 387-7155 or e-mail her at ncstokes@aol.com
