David—Lesson 3

Note:  This lesson reviews the video sequences of David’s life.  Specific passages of scripture, concepts, and memory verses will be highlighted in lessons 4 and 5.  Beginning with this lesson, 6th and 7th grades will meet separately.

Scripture:          1 Samuel 16 through 2 Samuel 12

(from David’s anointing through the birth of Solomon)

Objectives:

  • Students will review the video of David.
  • Students will sequence the events of David’s life in proper order.
  • Students will look at some of the psalms that are associated with David.

Gathering Time/Introduction: (Coach)

1.      The guide should stand near the chart paper on which students wrote statements about David and his life over the past two weeks.  As students arrive, assist them to mark through any statements they know now to be incorrect after watching the video of David’s life. Allow them to add any other statements about David that are not already there.

2.      The Coach leads the opening routine: snack, fellowship, Prayer Wall activity, and Prayer Chain.  Name tags are available.

3.      Introduce the Guide who will lead the workshop lesson.

Workshop Lesson Procedure: (Guide takes over from here)

Scripture/Application

1.      Point out to the class as a whole how the chart of statements about David’s life has been modified to be correct based on the video they watched over the past two weeks.

2.      Pass out Bibles and ask the class to find 1 and 2 Samuel.  Ask students to spend a few minutes perusing these books to note the stories about David they watched on the video.

3.      Ask a few students to share a part of David’s story they find and to give the chapter/verse for the story.  This activity is to help students know the video was based on scripture.  See the attached list of scenes and scripture passages.

4.      Ask all students to stand.  Pass out small pieces of paper (or index cards) to the coaches on which have been written the following phrases.  Ask coaches to tape one phrase on each student’s back.  Coaches and/or the guide can participate, too if there are not enough students for one per paper.

·         Saul becomes king

·         Saul disobeys God

·         God turns away from Saul

·         Samuel anoints David

·         David plays the harp

·         David kills Goliath

·         Saul becomes David’s enemy

·         Jonathan helps David leave

·         Saul and Jonathan die

·         David becomes king

·         David moves to Jerusalem

·         David wants to build a temple

·         God promises David’s descendents will be king

·         David commits adultery with Bathsheba

·         Uriah dies

·         David knows he has sinned

·         David and Bathsheba’s baby dies

·         Solomon is born

5.      Once each student has a paper on their back.  Tell them they are to ask ONLY Yes/No questions OR to use charades to figure out what their paper says.  For example a student could ask:  “Is the name David on my paper?”   “Is there another name on my back?”  Charades can be used to act out the verbs such as “kill”, “leave”, “plays the harp” etc.  Encourage students not to tell each other what is written on their papers.

6.      After all students have figured out what is on their back, ask them to remove the paper.  Holding the papers, ask students to line up in correct order of when these events happened in David’s life.  NOTE: The correct order is that listed above.

7.      You can mix the papers up, tape them on the students’ backs again, and let them play the game again if you have time and the students seem to enjoy it.

8.      List the following psalms on chart paper.

·         Psalm 23

·         Psalm 66:1-7

·         Psalm 68:1-6

·         Psalm 91:5-16

·         Psalm 51

9.      Have the following scenes from the video written on individual pieces of paper and taped in random order near the chart of psalms.

·         David plays the harp for Saul

·         David returns from killing Goliath

·         David fights the Philistines so that he can marry Michal

·         David brings the ark to Jerusalem

·         David prays as his child is dying

10.   Remind the students how psalms were used in the movie to accompany several scenes.  Ask the class to find the first psalm in their Bibles and try to match it with the scene it accompanied in the movie.  Continue until all psalms have been matched with a scene. NOTE:  The psalms as listed in 8 above correspond to the scenes as listed in 9.

11.  Tell the students that psalms are a kind of prayer.  Psalms usually express a strong emotion: great joy or thanksgiving or sadness or fear.  Ask the students how each psalm listed “fits” the situation to which it was tied in the video.  Some answers they might give are:

·         Psalm 23 is full of comforting images that would have been soothing to Saul.

·         Psalm 66 is a joyful, victorious psalm that praises God for helping defeat enemies.

·         Psalm 68 is a battle psalm, full of anger and fierceness.

·         Psalm 91 is a comforting psalm, full of images of being protected.  David is finally safe in his own kingdom.

·          Psalm 51 is a sad, repentant psalm, full of remorse.

12.  End the class by posting the icon on the timeline.  See attached.

Closing (Coach):

1.      The Coach conducts the closing prayer time.

2.      Close/lock the door and turn off the lights.

Guide preparation in advance:

1.      For questions on this lesson plan, call Nancy Stokes, 387-7155 or e-mail her at ncstokes@aol.com

2.      Set up the “city” room with chairs and the “country” room with stools.  Only one table is necessary in each room.

3.      Post your class’ chart paper with the words/phrases written during the first two weeks about David’s life.

4.      Write the phrases (in lesson above) that describe David’s life on 3x5 index cards or similar size paper—one phrase on each card.

5.      Prepare a piece of chart paper with the five psalms mentioned in this lesson.

6.      Write the scenes from the video mentioned in this lesson on individual pieces of paper and post near the chart list of psalms.

Psalms Used in the Movie

The movie seems to stick closest to the American Standard Version when it quotes the psalms.  The following are the scenes that use psalms:

Psalm 23: When David plays the harp for Saul

1 Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: He guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of Jehovah for ever.

Psalm 66: When David returns from killing Goliath

1 Make a joyful noise unto God, all the earth: 2 Sing forth the glory of his name: Make his praise glorious. 3 Say unto God, How terrible are thy works! Through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee. 4 All the earth shall worship thee, And shall sing unto thee; They shall sing to thy name. 5 Come, and see the works of God; [He is] terrible in his doing toward the children of men. 6 He turned the sea into dry land; They went through the river on foot: There did we rejoice in him. 7 He ruleth by his might for ever; His eyes observe the nations: Let not the rebellious exalt themselves.

Psalm 68: When David is fighting the Philistines

1 Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered; Let them also that hate him flee before him. 2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: As wax melteth before the fire, So let the wicked perish at the presence of God. 3 But let the righteous be glad; let them exult before God: Yea, let them rejoice with gladness. 4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: Cast up a highway for him that rideth through the deserts; His name is Jehovah; and exult ye before him. 5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, Is God in his holy habitation. 6 God setteth the solitary in families: He bringeth out the prisoners into prosperity; But the rebellious dwell in a parched land.

Psalm 91: When David is bringing the ark to Jerusalem

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, Nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; [But] it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, And see the reward of the wicked.  9 For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent. 11 For he will give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot. 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble: I will deliver him, and honor him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, And show him my salvation.

Psalm 51: When David is praying as his child is dying

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions; And my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, And done that which is evil in thy sight; 7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, And blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy Spirit from me.
